Abstract: Apparatus and a method for providing roaming service to a telecom-munications station which can act as a cellular station or if plugged into a jack connected to a land-line switch, can act like a land-line telephone. When such a Universal Main Station (UMS) is plugged into a jack connected to a land-line switch, the station calls a server system which obtains the directory number corresponding to the jack into which the UMS was plugged. The server notifies a home switch of said UMS to forward calls to that directory number. When the UMS subsequently unplugs from the jack, the UMS registers as a mobile station and the home switch is notified to forward calls to the UMS, acting as a mobile station and identified by a secret directory number, identified in the course of the registration. Advantageously, this arrangement allows a mobile station equipped with an arrangement for detecting the presence of land-line power and arranged to substitute signals received from a jack for radio signals to roam widely, and to receive a choice of cellular service or land-line service wherever the station roams.

Examples of predetermined conditions include the account balance of the first billing source dropping to zero, communications with predetermined telephone numbers, the user being in a predetermined geographic area, the time of day, or the day of the week.

Abstract: A system and method that uses the flexible bandwidth of a data network in order to provide more flexible services to remote line units comprises a telephone switch configured to provide telephony service to a wireline terminal and an access network head end connected via circuit switch transmission facilities to the telephone switch and configured to manage bearer channels in a data network. The system also includes a data network carrying the bearer channels and a line unit separate from the telephone switch connected to the data network and to the wireline terminals configured to interface wireline terminals to one of the bearer channels. The access network head end reserves a predetermined bandwidth through the network and allocates a portion of the bandwidth to each of the line units. The amount of bandwidth allocated to each line unit is variable.
