    Abstract: PURPOSE: To obtain the corresponding hydroperoxide in high selectivity and conversion at high reaction rate by oxidizing an arylalkyl hydrocarbon with an oxygen-contg. gas in the presence of a catalyst, i.e., manganese dioxide or permanganate. CONSTITUTION: This hydroperoxide is obtained by reaction of 100 pts.wt. of a compound of the formula (P and Q are each H or an alkyl; n is 1-3; Ar is a n-valent aromatic hydrocarbon) with an oxygen-contg. gas (e.g. air) under atomospheric pressure at 50-130 deg.C using 0.00001-5wt.% of a catalyst, i.e. manganese dioxide or permanganate. By the above method, the objective compound can be obtained at high conversion rate without formation of byproducts such as formic acid and acetic acid while suppressing the decomposition of the compound formed.

    Abstract: PURPOSE: To obtain the subject corresponding hydroperoxide in high selectivity at high conversion rate by oxidizing an arylalkyl hydrocarbon with an oxygen- contg. gas in the presence of a catalyst such as ruthenium oxide. CONSTITUTION: This hydroperoxide is obtained by reaction of a compound of the formula (P and Q are each H or an alkyl; n is 1-3; Ar is a n-valent aromatic hydrocarbon) with an oxygen-contg. gas (e.g. air) under normal pressures at 40-120 deg.C in the presence of a catalyst, a ruthenium oxide or a ruthenium compound having Ru-O-Ru structure. The ruthenium oxide or ruthenium compound as the catalyst are e.g. ruthenium dioxide or μ-oxo-diacetato-bis(tripyridylruthenium), respectively. The amount of the catalyst to be used is 0.00001-10 pts.wt. based on 100 pts.wt. of the compound of the formula.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To crystallize and separate the titled compound, by reacting phenols with specific alkenylbenzenes or alkenylphenols, etc., in the presence of an acidic ion exchange polymer, adding a base to the reaction mixture, distilling off phenols and concentrating the residue. CONSTITUTION:Phenols (e.g. phenol) are made to react with at least one kind of compound selected from dialkenylbenzenes, bis(hydroxyalkyl)benzenes and (hydroxyalkyl)-alkenylbenzenes or at least one kind of compound selected from alkenylphenols and mono(hydroxyalkyl)phenols [e.g. bis(2-hydroxyphenyl-2-propyl) benzene] in the presence of an acidic ion exchange polymer. A base is added to the obtained mixture containing bisphenols (e.g. bisphenol M), the phenols in the mixture are distilled out, the distillation residue is concentrated and bisphenols are separated from the concentrate.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To enhance a high speed recording property, to make the fading of a recording image with the elapse of time hard to develop and to enhance the whiteness of a recording layer, by using high purity 3,4'-(1-methylethylidene) bisphenol (m,p-bisphenol A) having a specific m.p. range as an electron acceptive coupler. CONSTITUTION:High purity m,p-bisphenol A to be used is obtained by reacting m-isopropenylphenol and phenol in the presence of an acid catalyst and has a m.p. of 120-140 deg.C. In thermal recording material, m,p-bisphenol A being a coupler is used along with a colorless-light-colored electron donating dye precursor (color former) but, as the dye precursor, a triarylmethane type compound, a diphenylmethane type compound, a xanthene type compound, a spiropyrane type compound or the like are designated. A coating solution is generally prepared by together or separately dispersing the dye precursor and the coupler in water being a dispersing medium. By this method, a serious drawback such that a formed recording image is faded with the elapse of time is eliminated.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To provide a new compound useful as a photostabilizer for polymer materials. CONSTITUTION:The compound of formula I (R is H, alkyl, alkoxy, acyl; R to R are H, hydrocarbon, halogen, etc.; X is H, -NR'-; m is 1-2; R' is H, alkyl, aliphatic aminoalkyl, etc.). The compound of formula I is produced by reacting a compound of formula II with a compound of formula III and subsequently acylating the product. The addition of the compound of formula I to a polymer material can give excellent photostability to the polymer material, and since the compound of formula I is substantially not bled out from the polymer material of substrate, the excellent photostability-imparting effect can be maintained for a long period. The compound of formula I is useful as a photostabilizer for protecting the polymer material especially from the deterioration action of UV rays.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain 2-(3-hydroxyphenyl)-2-(4-hydroxyphenyl)propane which is used as a starting substance for high polymer materials such as carbonate or epoxy resins and has a high melting point in such a range where the substance is suitably used as a heat-sensitive recording material. CONSTITUTION:For example, m-isopropenylphenol diluted with a hydrocarbon solvent such as toluene in a volume over 3 times that of the reactant is added gradually to a largely excessive amount of phenol containing hydrogen chloride as an acid catalyst so that the molar ratio f m-isopropenylphenol/phenol is always kept at below 0.07 to effect the reaction at about 20-60 deg.C. Then, the reaction mixture is subjected to distillation under reduced pressure to remove hydrogen chloride, the hydrocarbon solvent and phenol in order. The bottom is recrystallized with a solvent such as an aromatic hydrocarbon to give 2-(3- hydroxyphenyl)-2-(4-hydroxyphenyl)propane of high purity, melting at 135-140 deg.C.
