Abstract: A system and method for reducing the interference experienced by sensitive electronic devices, such as hearing aids, operative in the vicinity of CDMA user communication devices. A transmitter of the communications device is configured to transmit signal power substantially continuously at a full rate power level irrespective of the variable data rate at which the transmitter would otherwise be operative. In a first embodiment, a variable rate vocoder within the transmitter is directed to perform full-rate vocoding, irrespective of an instantaneous level of user speech. In a second embodiment, a microprocessor builds full-rate frames using repeated versions of code symbols generated by the vocoder. In a third embodiment, the microprocessor builds full rate frames by generating signaling bits of a predetermined pattern to pad otherwise non-full frames.

Abstract: A system and method for adaptively sectorizing channel resources within a digital cellular communication system. The system utilizes an antenna array for providing at least first and second electromagnetic beams for receiving a first information signal transmitted by a specific one of a plurality of users (22), thereby generating first and second received signals. A first set of beam-forming signals are then generated from the first and second received signals by a beam-forming network (224) and a switch matrix (228). Demodulating receivers (230) are provided for demodulating at least first and second beam-forming signals included within the first set of beam-forming signals, thereby producing first and second demodulated signals. The system further includes a tracking network (240) for tracking multipath information signals, received from various positions and angles of incidence.

Abstract: A novel and improved method for implementing a high-transmission-rate over-the-air interface is described. A transmit system provides an in-phase channel set (90) and a quadrature-phase channel set (92). The in-phase channel set (90) is used to provide a complete set of orthogonal medium rate control and traffic channels. The quadrature-phase channel (92) set is used to provide a high-rate supplemental channel and an extended set of medium rate channels that are orthogonal to each other and the original medium rate channels. The high-rate supplemental channel is generated over a set of medium rate channels using a short channel code. The medium rate channel are generated using a set of long channel codes.
