Abstract: The present invention relates to a process for the production of unsaturated aliphatic acids and the catalyst therefor, by the vapor phase oxidation of the corresponding unsaturated aliphatic aldehydes with molecular oxygen, optionally in the presence of steam, in the presence of an oxidation catalyst consisting of the oxides of the elements molybdenum, vanadium, tungsten and lanthanum, and optionally one or more of the oxides of the elements manganese, iron, copper, aluminum, cobalt, nickel, phosphorus, zinc, bismuth, silver, cadmium, niobium, arsenic, chromium, the alkali and the alkaline earth elements.

Abstract: 1427389 Maleic anhydride STANDARD OIL CO 18 April 1973 [5 May 1972] 18738/73 Heading C2C [Also in Division B1] Maleic anhydride is produced by oxidizing 1,3-butadiene, n-butenes, crotonaldehyde, furan or a mixture thereof with molecular oxygen at 250-600‹ C. using a catalyst comprising antimony, molybdenum, oxygen, vanadium and/or iron and, optionally, tungsten, magnesium, aluminium and/or nickel in the atomic proportions Sb a Mo b V c Fed Z e O x wherein: Z=W, Mg, Al and/or Ni; a=1-9; b=1-10; c, d, e=0-1 but c + d is greater than zero; and x is a number to satisfy valency requirements. The reaction pressure is usually superatmospheric but may be atmospheric or subatmospheric with a contact time of 1 to 50 sees. The feed may contain diluents, e.g. steam, nitrogen and carbon oxides. An air to reactant ratio of 12 to 20=1 may be employed. The examples describe the use of butadiene as feed to give a maleic anhydride product containing some acrylic acid.

Abstract: Catalysts containing the oxides of vanadium, phosphorus and uranium have been found to be especially effective in the oxidation of n-butane, n-butenes and butadiene with molecular oxygen in the vapor phase to yield maleic anhydride. The reaction with n-butane gives an especially pure product in high yield.

Abstract: Coated catalysts having an inert support material with an outer surface and a coating of active catalyst containing tungsten, vanadium and molybdenum plus optionally one or more of Fe, Mn, Cu, Sn, Sb, Cr, Ce, U, Co, Ni, Zn, Mg or mixture thereof have been found to be especially effective catalysts for the production of unsaturated acids from the corresponding unsaturated aldehydes, for example, acrolein is oxidized to acrylic acid using these catalysts. The catalysts give a very low exotherm, very high single pass yields of the desired acid and reduce the undesirable by-products.

Abstract: Oxidn. catalyst YaSbbMocVdZeOx (I) is used for the improved synthesis of maleic anhydride from 1,3-butadiene and molecular oxygen (II) at 250-600 degrees C. In (I), Y is Li and/or Ce; Z is W, Mg, Al or Ni as the metal or its oxide; a and d = 0.01-1.0; b and c = 1-9; e = 0-1; x = a number which satisfies the valence requirements of the other elements present. Improved yields of clean maleic anhydride and a decreased amt. of waste by-prods. are obtd. by using (I). In an example, 1,3-butadiene and air were passed over Lio.1sbMo3Vo.1Ox + W degrees 0.06 in a stainless steel tube. The heating jacket around the tube was at 360-371 degrees C and the contact time was 3.3 secs.
