Abstract: The invention relates to a packaging board comprising a fibrous base and one or more polymer coating layers on one or both sides of the fibrous base. According to the invention the fibrous base contains the combination of an alkyl ketene dimer size, stearic acid anhydride, a wet-strength size and an aluminium com- pound, which give the board resistance to aggressive liquids as well as thermal treatment, particularly an improved resistance to raw edge penetration in such circumstances. The invention further relates to containers and packages made of the board, for instance disposable drinking cups, dairy product cartons and auto- clave packages, as well as use of the board for such purposes.

Abstract: The invention comprises a method for producing identification marks (5) on layer-structured paper or board (7) to be manufactured in a continuous web a nd the marked papers and boards obtained with this method. With this method, th e marks (5) are made with a laser beam on a moving web form fiber layer (1), o n which a second layer of material (6) is subsequently overlaid in such a way that the marks remain inside the layer-structure of the moving web. The seco nd material layer (6) may comprise a second fiber layer or, for example, a polymer coating. The laser marking could take place, for example, by burning the surface of the fiber layer (1) or by engraving it. Inside the layer structure, the marks (5) are protected, but detectable with a detector to ensure the authenticity of the material: The marked paper or board is suitab le for product packages to be protected against product forgeries.

Abstract: The invention concerns a deep-drawn paper tray (4), particularly a shallow tray made of paperboard or cardboard, a method and an apparatus for manufacturing such a tray by deep-drawing techniques, and a closed product package comprising the tray of the invention, particularly a heat-sealed gas- and liquid-tight food package. The tray comprises a bottom (4a) and upwardly expanding side walls around the bottom, the side walls of the tray being shaped to expand through a plurality of circumferential steps (4b, 4c, 4d) dimensioned low enough for obtaining wrinkle-free side walls for the tray. The outermost step is a flat, wrinkle-free rim flange (4d), which enables liquid and gas proof heat-sealing of a lid to form the package. The apparatus according to the invention may comprise upper and lower moulding tools (10, 11) with concentric movable frames (10b, 10c, 10d) for forming the tray bottom and side wall steps to paper blanks, and moulding tools (10) may be mounted onto a rotating turret (9) carrying a paper blank through working stations arranged along the turret circumference, to shape the tray bottom and the side wall steps at the consecutive stations.

Abstract: The invention relates to methods for lowering the melt viscosity and thereby improving heat-sealability of a polyester. The solution according to the invention is subjecting polyester to electron beam (EB) radiation. The lowered melt viscosity allows a lower heat- sealing temperature, and permits sealing of polyester to an uncoated fibrous surface. The preferred polyester for the invention is polylactide, as such or as blended with another polyester.
