    Abstract: Described is a system and method for encrypted communications. The system may include first and second transponders. The first transponder has a first memory arrangement that stores a first key. The second transponder includes a second memory arrangement and has an access to a second key. The first transponder generates a first message for delivery to the second transponder, and encrypts the first message using a randomization key to generate a second message. Then, the first transponder encrypts (a) the second message and (b) one of the a randomization key corresponding index using the first key to generate a third message. The second key may decrypt the third message.

    Abstract: A device for imaging optical code symbols comprises no more than 1024 pixels, wherein each of the pixels has an aspect ratio that is greater than 2 to 1 with a short dimension not greater than 4 žm and not less than 2 žm, wherein preferably the pixels are arranged in a single row. Also provided is a bar code reader including a sensor for imaging a field of view of the reader comprising a single semiconductor device as described above. Apparatus and techniques are provided which reduce and/or eliminate the need for illumination of a target by the imager, thereby reducing the overall power consumed by the imager and/or its overall size. An imager with an increased working range is provided, as is a light emitting diode which produces a light with reduced line thickness.

    Abstract: A method of operating a workstation includes capturing multiple monitoring images each being captured with the imaging sensor while the illumination light source is energized during one of multiple short exposure-time-periods, and detecting a checkup-condition that includes analyzing the multiple monitoring images to determine the presence of any adverse feature on workstation's window. Each of the multiple short exposure-time-periods is shorter than four times of a threshold exposure-time-period but no shorter than 25% of the threshold exposure-time-period. The threshold exposure-time-period is a minimal exposure-time-period needed for the imaging sensor to capture recognizable patterns of a barcode that is in directing contacting with the window while the illumination light source is energized.

    Abstract: A plurality of the areas of differing light reflectivity of a bar code symbol (34) or the like are simultaneously illuminated using, for example, a beam of laser light (22) that has an elongate cross-section. The light beam (22) is swept over the symbol to be read in a direction transverse to the elongated dimension of the illuminated region (78) so that a two-dimensional area (42) of the symbol is illuminated over time. The reflected light is sensed by a 1D CCD array (50). A microprocessor (52) within the scanner provides visual feedback to aid a user in aligning the device, and also provides for a selectable aspect ratio for the image, a selectable image resolution and size, a selectable aspect ratio of the illumination, and a selectable pixel size. All of these options may be programmed within the microprocessor (52), enabling the device to read a large variety of two-dimensional symbols.

    Abstract: An imaging barcode scanner and method are provided. The scanner includes a first array of photosensitive elements having a first field of view traversing a window and intersecting a work surface at a first angle, and a second array of photosensitive elements having a second field of view traversing the window and intersecting the work surface at a second angle. The scanner also includes a processor configured to: receive a first image of the work surface from the first array of photosensitive elements, and a second image of the work surface from the second array of photosensitive elements; register the first image with the second image; and generate an enhanced image of the work surface based on the registered first image and second image, the enhanced image having a greater pixel density than the first image and the second image.

    Abstract: A method of imaging a target object with an imaging reader. The method includes the following: (1) detecting light from the target object through a lens arrangement with an image sensor to generate light-field data; (2) generating a stream of image data including image data representing an expected in focus image of the target object, and (3) processing the expected in focus image of the target object to decode a barcode on the target object. The image sensor includes an array of photosensitive elements and an array of microlenses that overlays the array of photosensitive elements located at a focus plane of the microlens.
