PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a semiconductor device or a compact image forming device for forming an image of an optical code-symbol. SOLUTION: A semiconductor device or miniature imager for imaging optical code symbols comprises no more than 1024 pixels, wherein each of the pixels has an aspect ratio that is greater than 2 to 1 with a short dimension not greater than 4 μm and not less than 2 μm, wherein preferably the pixels are arranged in a single row. The optical and electrical systems of the miniature imager are optimized to reduce one or more dimensions or the volume of the imager. Also provided is a bar code reader including a sensor for imaging a field of view of the reader comprising a single semiconductor device as described above.; Apparatus and techniques are provided which reduce and/or eliminate the need for illumination of a target by the imager, thereby reducing the overall power consumed by the imager and/or its overall size. SOLUTION: The semiconductor device or the small image forming unit for forming the image of the optical code symbol has the pixels of not more than 1024. The short size of each pixel is 2 μm to 4 μm and it has the aspect ratio of 2 to 1. It is desirable that the pixels are arranged in a single row. The optical and electrical system of the small image forming unit is optimized so that the volume of one-dimension or the larger dimension on the small image forming unit is reduced. A bar code reader including a sensor for imaging a field of view of the reader having the single semiconductor device is further supplied. A device or technology for reducing and/or eliminating necessity for target illumination by the image forming unit are supplied. A portable instrument incorporates an electro-optical assembly for reading indicia during a reading mode, and for projecting a bit-mapped color image during a display mode. A manually operable switch on the instrument is disposed for selecting one of the modes. The color image is formed by pulsing a plurality of differently colored lasers at selected times on selected scan lines.

A system and method are provided for sensing an image of an object and an optical code associated with the object and generating respective object image data and optical code image data. A database stores a plurality of digital codes and an object image data entry associated with each respective digital code of the plurality of digital codes. A processing unit generates at least one digital code; accesses at least one object image data entry associated with at least one respective stored digital code that substantially matches the respective at least one generated digital code; and compares the object image data with the at least one accessed object image data entry and determines if the comparison results are within a predetermined image recognition certainty threshold.

Verfahren und Vorrichtung zum Erkennen der Ausrichtung von Dokumenten mit Strichcode-Decodierung. Das Verfahren beinhaltet (1) das Erfassen eines Bildes des Dokumentes mit einer Bildgebungsanordnung mit einem Festkörper-Imager; (2) das Feststellen des Vorhandenseins eines Strichcodes in dem erfassten Bild des Dokuments; (3) das Decodieren des Strichcodes; (4) das Ermitteln einer Aufrecht-Richtung des Dokuments in Abhängigkeit von einer Ausrichtung des Strichcodes in dem Dokument; und (5) das Einstellen einer Ausrichtung des Dokuments in dem erfassten Bild auf der Basis der Aufrecht-Richtung des Dokuments. In einer Ausführung ist der Strichcode mit Ausrichtungsdaten konfiguriert, die die Aufrecht-Richtung des Dokuments anzeigen.
