Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the size and the weight of a component used for collection of reflected light by providing an integrated optical element, which includes a beam forming part and beam bending part made one-piece and a light collection part which collects reflected light to lead it to a detector, to scan and move a light beam. SOLUTION: A light beam 16 from a semiconductor laser 18 passes through a plastic lens 20 and is turned at 90 deg. by total reflection in a prism 22. It is emitted from the prism 22 and passes through an aperture 24 in a collection mirror 26 and strikes on an oscillatory scanning mirror 28. Then, an exit light beam 30 for scanning is generated and is led to indicia to be read. Reflected light 32 from a mark is first received by the oscillatory scanning mirror 28, and this mirror 28 leads it to a concave 34 of the collection mirror 26. The concave 34 focuses light on a photo detector 40 through an aperture 36 and a filter 38. The output signal of the photo detector 40 is supplied to proper electronics in a printed circuit board 14 by electric coupling 42.

Abstract: The invention relates to optical scanners. The invention comprises a multi-range scanner assembly for electro-optically reading indicia having parts of differing light reflectivity on a target located at a variable distance from the assembly, comprising: (a) a first light source for producing a first beam for short range scanning operations; (b) a second light source for producing a second beam for long range scanning operations; (c) a scanning element including a scanning mirror for causing the first and second beams to be alternately scanned over a field of view; (d) a collection optical system for collecting light reflected from the field of view; and (e) an optical detector for detecting light directed thereto by the collection optical system and for generating electrical signals corresponding to the reflected light.

Abstract: An optical scanner such as a bar code scanner includes a segmented fold mirror, the individual sections of which have different profiles. By directing the scanning laser beam across the fold mirror, plurality of scan lines are created, at different distances from the scanner. This provides increased flexibility by extending the scanner's working range. In alternative embodiments, a collector mirror and/or a scanning mirror may be segmented. In addition, beam shaping may be provided by reflecting the beam from one or more aplanar surfaces.
