    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain the title carbon fiber capable of giving excellent processability and physical properties through composite formation with heat- resistant matrix resin as reinforcing fiber by sizing carbon fiber with an aromatic polyamide-imide copolymer made up of specific structural units. CONSTITUTION:Firstly, a sizing agent consisting of an aromatic polyamide-imide copolymer made up of (A) structural unit of formula I (Z is trifunctional aromatic group with two functional groups bound to adjacent carbon atoms), (B) structural unit of formula II (Ar is aryl; R1 is 1-4C alkyl; b is 0-2; x is 1-500) and (C) structural unit of formula III with the molar ratios (B+C)/A = (1:1) and C/B=[(0.95-0):(0.05-1)] and the respective units linked alternately, is dissolved in an organic solvent. Thence, carbon fiber is immersed in the resulting solution, thus obtaining the objective sized carbon fiber. When composite formation is made using the present fiber with esp. a heat-resistant matrix resin, an excellent composite material with excellent processability and physical properties can be obtained.
