Aromatic hydroxycarboxylic acids and their salts with Group IA or IIA metals are prepared by reacting (i) phenol unsubstituted in at least one of the 2-, 4- and 6-positions, (ii) 1-naphthol unsubstituted in at least one of the 2-, 4-, 5- and 7-positions or (iii) 2-naphthol unsubstituted in at least one of the 1-, 3-, 6- and 8-positions (in which (i), (ii) and (iii) may be used in the form of their Group IA or IIA metal salts, and are optionally halogen-, OH-, alkoxy-, alkyl-, amino-, aryl- or carboxyl-substituted) with a Group IA or IIA metal carbonate, aliphatic monocarboxylate and/or aliphatic dicarboxylate, and with CO, and if desired acidifying the salt produced to give the corresponding acid. In a modification, when a Group IA or IIA metal formate is used, the reaction is effected in absence of CO.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To prepare a cyclohexanol derivative useful as a solvent and a raw material of polymer, in one step, by the reductive addition reaction of an aromatic hydrocarbon with hydrogen in the presence of a mixture containing a strong acid, water, and if necessary, an organic acid, using a noble metal of VIII group of the periodic table as a catalyst. CONSTITUTION:The preparation of cyclohexanol derivative of formula (Ac is H, organic acid residue or strong acid residue; R is alkyl; n is 0, 1 or 2) by the hydrogenation of an aromatic hydrocarbon (e.g. benzene) using a noble metal of the VIII group of the periodic table (pref. Ru or Rh) as a catalyst, is carried out in the presence of a strong acid, and water and/or an organic acid. The presence of the strong acid is essential, and its amount is >=2% of the sum of the strong acid and water and/or an organic acid. The strong acid is, e.g. sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid, etc., and the organic acid is, preferably acetic acid.

    Abstract: NEW MATERIAL:An aliphatic triisocyanate I (n is integer of >= 4). EXAMPLE:1,6,11-Undecatriisocyanate. USE:A raw material for polymers, e.g. coatings, films, foams, elastomers, adhesives, fibers, etc., Excellent in light stability, weather resistance and solvent resistance. Coating film prepared from the compound has excellent quick-drying characteristics, surface hardness, etc. PREPARATION:The compound I is prepared by (1) decarboxylating and dimerizing an aliphatic lactam, an alpha,omega-aminocarboxylic acid or their polymer in the presence of a strong base, (2) converting the resulted amino shiff base II or diaminoketon III to a triamine IV by the catalytic reduction with hydrogen in the presence of ammonia, and (3) reacting the triamine IV with phosgene. The compound II and III are in equilibrium in the presence of water.
