Abstract: PURPOSE:To improve the mercury adsorbing capacity of auxiliary amalgam immediately after unlighting by providing main amalgam for controlling the mercury vapor pressure under lighting in a light emission tube encapsulated with mercury while providing an auxiliary amalgam for emitting mercury at start in the vicinity of an electrode while furthermore encapsulating helium in the light emission tube as a starting rare gas. CONSTITUTION:Upon unlighting under operating condition, the temperature of an electrode 13 will drop thus to lower the temperature of an auxiliary amalgam 21. Consequently, the relative mercury vapor pressure of the auxiliary amalgam 21 will drop below that of main amalgam 20 thereby almost all mercury floating in the tube is adsorbed by the auxiliary amalgam 21. Since the heat conductivity of helium gas encapsulated in the light emission tube 7 is about 8 times higher when compared with argon gas under same pressure, the auxiliary amalgam 21 is cooled in shorter time when compared with a conventional tube encapsulated with argon gas. Consequently, mercury in the tube is quickly absorbed by the auxiliary amalgam 21. In other word, the auxiliary amalgam 21 will adsorb more mercury per elapse time when compared with a conventional lamp employing argon.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To reduce the rise in the temperature of a bent fluorescent lamp, by flattening the cross-section form of the discharge path of the lamp to increase the surface area of the path to augment the heat radiation area of the lamp. CONSTITUTION:A discharge path 10a in a glass tube 8a has a flat cross-sectional form such as an ellipse, an oblong and a crescent. For that reason, the glass tube 8a surrounding the discharge path 10a has a flat cross-sectional form as well. The tube 8a is continuously bent to be shaped nearly as U so that the major axes x-x of the flat cross-sectional forms of the mutually adjacent portions of the discharge path 10a extend nearly as V. Since the surface area of the discharge path 10a is made larger than that of a discharge path of circular cross section, the heat radiation surface of the former is also made larger than that of the latter to reduce the rise in the temperature of a fluorescent lamp 6. Since the surface area of the tube 8a is increased, the area of deposition of a fluorescent substance thereon can be augmented to increase the light emission area thereof.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain a long discharge path easily so as to improve illumination efficiency by connecting multiple glass tubes together via conductive metal objects with glass bond to form a single discharge path which has many curved parts. CONSTITUTION:Multiple glass tubes consisting of glass tubes 21 curved into J shape, glass tubes 22, 23 curved into U shape, etc. are connected end to end with glass bond via copper or other conductive metal 24 to form a single discharge path. Electrodes 26 are sealed to the openings at both ends of the discharge path to form a curved fluorescent lamp 20 which is used as a substitute for an incandescent lamp. Thus a discharge path with many curved parts can be formed easily and easy starting is enabled by the conductive metal objects 24 which make relaying points for starting discharge. Therefore high illumination can be obtained with a long discharge path of a small cross sectional area.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To facilitate manufacture of the coolest section of lamp thus to control the mercury vapor pressure well by providing an inflated section which will be a portion of discharge path on a substrate when fixing a plurality of U-shaped glass bulbs for forming a bent discharge path onto the substrate. CONSTITUTION:A pair of electrodes 5 are secured to a substrate 4 and a plurality of U-shaped glass bulbs 11 are fixed while containing said electrodes 5 at one end then contained in a light transmission enclosure 1 to produce a compact fluorescent lamp. Here, an outwardly inflated coupling section 8 is formed on the substrate 4 and the inside open section is partitioned air-tightly from the interior of the enclosure 1 by adhering the open ends of respective bulb 11 through choking/coupling boards 10 thus to use the coupling section 8 as a portion of discharge path 8. Since temperature rise at the coupling section 8 is suppressed through radiating function of substrate 4, the coolest section of lamp can be appeared easily resulting in improved control of mercury vapor pressure through amalgam.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To facilitate manufacture of three dimensionally curved fluorescent lamp having many curved portions by preparing an approximately planar glass bulb formed with a zigzag discharge path through communication between plural linear portions and curved portions then thermally softening the curved portion of said bulb and bending. CONSTITUTION:Upon blowing in of pressurized gas through discharge tube 5 into U-shaped glass bulb 3, joints 1d-3d, 3d are formed. Then the joints 1d-3d, 3d are fused to position three continuous U-shaped glass bulbs 1-3 in same plane P-P. Then the communicating sections 8, 8 are bent in the arrow direction under still soft condition or after thermally softening if they 8, 8 are cooled and hardened. Consequently, respective U-shaped glass bulb 1-3 is positioned at every other side of hexagonal shape resulting in a three dimensional multi- bent fluorescent lamp.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To make not to damage of fluorescent material layer by using a rebinding medium formed en bloc so as to fix a shape while sealing this into a luminous bulb. CONSTITUTION:A housing bulb 6 is about equally long to a luminous bulb 2 while its outer diameter is made to be smaller than the inner diameter of the luminous bulb 2 about by a few mm so as not to damage a fluorescent material layer 1 and a fibrous solid 5 has gaps on both ends so as not to be an obstacle to the electrodes 3 and 3. A housing bulb 6 thus prepared is inserted into a glass bulb 2 having a fluorescent material layer 1. Thereby, the housing bulb is able to be inserted with no damage to the fluorescent material layer 1 while damage of the fluorescent material layer 1 is reduced at least as compared with the case of directly inserting the fibrous solid 5. Next, when mounting the mounts 4 and 4, both ends of the housing bulb are together heat-welded to the mounts 4 and 4 so that the housing bulb 6 is fixed inside the luminous bulb 2.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To reduce wastage of getter metal by mounting the mercury getter serving to absorb mercury in turning off the captioned lamp and discharge it in starting the lamp in the vicinity of an electrode of a luminous tube, while providing an auxiliary electrode located on the side of a discharge space from the mercury getter. CONSTITUTION:The captioned low pressure mercury vapor electrical discharge lamp is formed by housing a double U-shaped fluorescent lamp 5 having electrodes disposed on both ends thereof, a glow switch 6, and a ballast stabi lizer 7. Thereupon, a mercury getter 20 yielded by depositing indium on both surfaces of a stainless metal gauge is mounted in the vicinity of the electrode 17 after welding it to a lead wire 16, whereby the mercury getter is adapted to adsorb mercury upon turning off the lamp while it adapted to discharge mercury upon starting the lamp. While, an auxiliary electrode 23 having the lead wire 16 formed thereon by extending the wire is provided located on the side of a discharge space from the mercury getter 20. Hereby, the ions in con cern is adsorbed onto the auxiliary electrode 23 upon starting the lamp to moderate collision of the ions to the mercury getter 20, whereby wastage of the getter metal is reduced to improve the life of the lamp.
