Abstract: A color marking device including a control system for calibration of the device based upon dynamic color balance control of an output image. The system comprises a front end converter for converting an input signal representativ e of a target image comprising a preselected color into a device-dependent control signal in accordance with a device TRC, a color marking device for outputting an outpu t image in response to the control signal, a sensor for measuring a parameter from t he output image representative of a color of the output image, and, a point-wise controller for comparing the parameter with a corresponding parameter from the target image and constructing adjusted controlled points for the device TRC when the measured parameter and the corresponding parameter vary by a preselected value, a col or balance controller for constructing an adjusted device TRC from the controll ed points, whereby subsequently generated output images are output with the adjusted device TRC and, more accurately represent target input images.

Abstract: An image output terminal in a printer includes a control board providing an interface between an electronic subsystem of the printer and a printing unit of the image output terminal. An image disk can be provided in the image output terminal for receipt of image data from the electronic subsystem prior to submission to the printing unit. The control board further provides an interface between the electronic subsystem and the image disk and between the image disk and the printing unit such that communication is decoupled between the electronic subsystem and the printing unit as data is printed while the transfer of data from the electronic subsystem to the image disk is allowed during printing. The control board controls all communication between the electronic subsystem and the printing unit. The control board is able to detect fault conditions in the electronic subsystem, printing unit and control board itself.

During readout, cross over from one array to the next is effected within the overlapped areas and the redundant data discarded.

Abstract: An improved ink jet marking architecture for enhancing ink droplet placing accuracy. The improved architecture combines a bipolar scanning arrangement with a drop interlace scheme. The preferred marking apparatus comprises an array of ink jet column generators which direct ink droplets to first a charging region and then through a deflection region. The droplets are charged either negatively or positively depending an a desired droplet trajectory; thus the bipolar designation. The deflection region has an electric field strength slightly less than the breakdown field strength of air for the environment in which the apparatus is to operate. The high field strength reduces the charge which must be applied to the droplets and therefore minimizes the drop to drop coulomb interaction. The interlace strategy causes sequential drops from a given generator to be printed in non-sequential locations on the paper. This strategy spreads out the ink droplets in space and results in a reduction of both aerodynamic and coulombic interaction between droplets. By reducing these interactions and minimizing the time of flight for the drops the placement accuracy is increased. The placement accuracy is further enhanced by utilizing a charging scheme which takes into account the charge induced on other droplets in close proximity of the droplet to correct for coulomb interactions even the bipolar plus interlace strategy cannot avoid.
