Abstract: A document 14 to be read is illuminated by light source 10 and imaged by optics 16 onto a single 19 integrated defector array made up of a number of photosensitive linear arrays 20, 22, 24, 26. Each linear detector is read out to provide a line scan of the document. The document is then translated across the line, or its image is caused to translate to achieve the same result, and each linear array is read out again, resulting in raster input scanning of the document. The detector array consists of three or more linear arrays fabricated on the same integrated detector array 19 and located one above the other and horizontally aligned. Each one of the three arrays 20, 22, 24 is covered with a color filter 21, 23, 25, so that it only sees one color light (i.e., red, green, or blue). By reading the three arrays out in parallel, all three colors on the document are read simultaneously. The only difference between the three images (besides color), is that at any point in time, each one is at a different height on the document. This difference is eliminated by simply remembering which line each image is on and correctly formatting the data which reaches a printing device or is stored on a memory.

Abstract: The invention is an electric paper sheet that uses a pattern of conductive charge-retaining islands on the outward-facing side of the first of two thin layers used to encapsulate a Gyricon sheet. The second encapsulating layer may also coated with a conductive material, or made of a conductive material, and may or may not be patterned. The Gyricon sheet and two encapsulating layers comprise a sheet of Gyricon electric paper on which images can be written and erased repeatedly. The patterned charge-retaining islands of the first encapsulating layer receive electric charges from an external charge-transfer device. After the charge-transfer device is removed, the conductive, charge-retaining islands hold electric charge, creating an electric field in the electric paper sufficient to cause an image change.

Abstract: A display material for use in an electric paper system includes two opposing outer surfaces, between which is disposed a plurality of optically and electrically anisotropic elements suspended in a substance capable of being liquified. A rotatable disposition of each element is achievable while the element is suspended in the substance and the substance is liquified.

Abstract: A transmissive, backlit color twisted-nematic or super-twisted-nematic liquid crystal display employing a front fiber-optic faceplate (28) as a front retaining element of a liquid crystal cell (18) that increases viewing angle between the display and a viewer while minimizing or eliminating undesirable variations in luminance, contrast ratio and chromaticity is described. This novel configuration effectively decouples the liquid crystal cell (18) and other optical elements (12,14,16) behind the front fiber optic faceplate from the angular orientation of the viewer with respect to the display. The liquid crystal display described in this invention further provides a high quality color display, without viewing parallax, using a color selection filter mosaic (30) outside of the liquid crystal cell. The display also increases luminous efficiency and improves color saturation by concentrating the transmission of available backlight illumination through the use of a rear fiber-optic faceplate (32) and a second rear-mounted mosaic (34) of color interference filters.

Abstract: A two dimensional electro-optic modulator (12) comprises an electro-optic element and a two dimensional planar array of individually addressable electrodes (17a-17i, 18a-18i, 19a-19l) for spatially modulating a light beam (32) along a plurality of transverse axes or for imparting a geometric phase front to the light beam. Such a modulator may be used, for example, (1) in a real time or in a time delay and integration mode as a multigate light valve for (a) electro-optic line printing or (b) optical displays, or (2) in a real time mode as (a) a beam focussing and tracking device for optical memories or (b) an arcal input device, a Fourier plane filter, or an image plane correlation mask for optical processing.

Abstract: An optical disk system having direct read after write capabilities in which the write beam and the read beam are generated by a pair of integrated injection diode lasers. The integration can be achieved by mounting two separate injection diode lasers side by side in a common package or providing two side by side injection diode lasers formed on a common semiconductor substrate. The two lasers would be located in the same focal plane relative to a recording material, with one of the lasers pulse modulated to provide a data modulated write beam and the other laser driven in the continuous wave (CW) regime to provide a read beam of constant intensity. The plane containing the focused beams would be oriented relative to the recording material so that the focused beams impinge upon adjacent portions of one data track of the recording material. Since the pair of lasers are closely spaced (1-1000 microns) a common optical path or train is used for both the write beam and the read beam.
