Abstract: In a wireless communication system ( 10 ) a method and apparatus for inhibiting data transmissions during a data service outage at the access terminal ( 16 ). The access terminal ( 16 ) transmits an outage indicator to the access network ( 12 ) prior to the outage. A data service outage may be due to a page monitor of the voice portion of the system, or to frequency searching during which the access terminal (AT) is not available to receive data. The access network ( 12 ) does not transmit data during the outage. In one embodiment, the indicator is a DRC null cover. In an alternate embodiment, the indicator is a DRC having a zero data rate.

Abstract: A system and method is taught for controlling the power level of transmissions within a communication system having a base station, a mobile station, a communication channel, and a pilot channel. The mobile station determines a signal strength value according to a communication signal received by way of the communication channel. A pilot channel signal is determined according to a pilot signal transmitted by way of the pilot channel. The signal to noise ratio of the communication signal is determined according to the determined signal strength value and the pilot channel signal. The power level of a transmission is controlled according to the signal to noise ratio. The noise level in a communication channel within the communication system is estimated. The pilot channel signal includes pilot energy and pilot noise components. The pilot energy component is removed to provide a remaining pilot signal. Communication system operations are controlled according to the remaining pilot signal. The power levels of transmissions are controlled by determining the signal to noise ratio of a signal within the communication channel and determining a difference signal. The difference signal is formed by determining the difference between determined and desired signal to noise ratios. The difference signal is transmitted between the base station and the mobile station. The pilot channel has at least one frame and the power control signal is inserted into the frame. Thus, information representing the strength of the communication signal is transmitted to the base by way of the pilot channel within the frame. The pilot channel can have two information frames for transmitting the power control signal a plurality of times.

Abstract: Method and System for Utilization of an Outer Decoder in a Broadcast Services Communication System is described. Information to be transmitted is provided to a systematic portion of a plurality of transmit buffers and encoded by an outer decoder communicatively coupled to the transmit buffer. The resulting redundant bits are provided to a parity portion of each transmit buffer. The content of the transmit buffers, is multiplexed and encoded by an inner decoder to improve protection by adding redundancy. The receiving station recovers the transmitted information by an inverse process. Because a decoding complexity depends on the size of a systematic portion of the transmit buffer, reasoned compromise between a systematic portion size and number of transmit buffers yields decreased decoding complexity.

Abstract: The layers and protocols of an air interface layering architecture are designed to be modular and can be modified and upgraded to support new features, perform complex tasks, and implement additional functionality. Prior to commencement of data communication between a first entity (e.g., an access terminal) and a second entity (e.g., a radio network), a set of layers and/or protocols is selected for negotiation. For each selected layer and protocol (i.e., each attribute), a list of attribute values considered acceptable to the first entity is determined. The selected attributes and their associated attribute values are sent from the first entity and, in response, a list of processed attributes and their associated lists of processed attribute values arc received. Each list of processed attribute values includes attribute values considered acceptable to the second entity. The layers and protocols in the first entity are then configured in accordance with the received list of processed attributes and their associated processed attribute values. Other features related to configurable layers and protocols are also provided.

Abstract: A first network access point receives a first wireless link message from a first user terminal. The first wireless link message identifies the first user terminal. The first network access point or other system entity assigns an IP address to the first user terminal for use as a temporary mobile station identifier. The first network access point or other system entity installs a route for the IP address to a controller. The first network access point forwards a wireless link message to the user terminal specifying the IP address. The first or a second network access point receives another wireless link message from the first user terminal in which the first user terminal is identified with the IP address. The first or second network access point parses the message to determine the IP address and creates at least one standard IP packet designating the IP address specified in the message. The first or second network access point forwards the message to a router which routes the packet according to the IP address.
