THE APPLICATION OF FLUORACARBON POLYMERS COATINGS ON METAL ARTICLES BY ELECTRODEPOSITION IS THE SUBJECT OF THIS INVENTION; AQUEOUS DISPERSIONS CONTAINING CARBOXYLIC ACID POLYMER HAVING AN ACID NUMBER OF ABOUT 6-25 NEUTRALIZED WITH A WATER SOLUBLE BASIC COMPOUND, SUCH AS AMMONIA, AN AMINE, METAL HYDROXIDE, CONTAIN UNIFORMLY DISPERSED FLUOROCARBON POLYMER PARTICLES WHICH CAN BE ELECTRODEPOSITED ON METAL ARTICLES. Disclosed is an aqueous latex emulsion coating composition comprising a liquid dispersion polymer, said liquid dispersion polymer comprising a hydrophilic nonionic or anionic homopolymer or copolymer dispersed in a hydrophobic liquid carrier and containing an oil-in-water activator surfactant and wherein the liquid dispersion polymer is in the form of microparticles. The hydrophilic homopolymers or copolymers comprise for example monomer units derived from acrylic acid or acrylic acid salts. Also disclosed is an associative liquid dispersion polymer, said liquid dispersion polymer comprising a hydrophilic nonionic or anionic copolymer dispersed in a hydrophobic liquid carrier and containing an oil-in-water activator surfactant and wherein the liquid dispersion polymer is in the form of microparticles, and wherein the copolymer contains a minor amount of associative monomer units derived from ethylenically unsaturated monomers selected from the group consisting of the associative monomers. The associative liquid dispersion polymers are useful as thickeners for aqueous emulsion systems.

The present invention addresses the problem of providing a composition that delivers high barrier properties in fewer coating steps. The present invention solves this problem by providing a composition for gas barrier purposes that contains at least one carboxyl-containing resin (A), at least one divalent metal compound (B), and at least one alcohol (C). The alcohol (C) content of the composition is between 85 and 98 wt %, and the water content of the composition is 1% or less. The present invention, furthermore, is one that provides a gas barrier coating agent containing this composition for gas barrier purposes and a laminate having a substrate and a coat layer obtained by applying this coating agent.

This coating solution for a gas barrier contains an ammonium salt (A) of a polymer having a carboxyl group, a particulate multivalent metallic compound (B), and water, the content of the multivalent metallic compound (B) being about 0.5-2.0 times the chemical equivalent of the ammonium salt (A), and the mean particle diameter of the multivalent metallic compound (B) being about 4 μm or less.

Provided herein are aqueous dispersions. The aqueous dispersions can comprise a first copolymer derived from one or more ethylenically unsaturated monomers, and a second carboxy-functional copolymer derived from one or more carboxylic acid-containing monomers. The aqueous dispersions can be used to prepare low- or zero-VOC aqueous coating compositions that possess desirable properties, including good block resistance and scrub resistance. Coatings and coating formulations comprising the aqueous dispersion, as well as methods of making and using the same are also provided.
