Abstract: PURPOSE: A packet transfer method for duplexing protocols of a network layer and a transmission layer is provided to enable protocols to perform the same process simultaneously in an active board and a standby board. CONSTITUTION: Virtual interfaces(103,113) handle a task related to a path of packets. A packet having layer header information(201-203) comes into an active main processor board(101). When the packet passes a virtual interface layer(L2), its L2 layer header(MAC header(201)) is removed and thus the packet is changed to a packet(205) having only an L3 header. The packet(205) is copied so that the original one(205) is transferred to an upper protocol stack(102) and the copied packet(207) is transferred to a processor board(116) in a standby state through a duplex ether path(104). When the copied packet(207) is transferred, the L2 layer header(MAC header(201)) is attached to the copied packet(207). Accordingly, Ethernet physical device(105) of the active processor board(101) and the Ethernet physical device(112) of the standby processor board(116) have the same MAC address and IP address.
