    Abstract: An airbag cushion is disclosed for use in automotive protective systems. The airbag cushion includes a tube that may be restricted to prevent gas venting. A cord is coupled to the tube and to a surface of the cushion. Upon airbag deployment, the cord extends until taut or extends until the cushion encounters an obstruction. If pulled taut, the cord tightens the tube and restricts gas venting. If the cushion encounters an obstruction, the cord remains lax and the tube is able to vent gas.

    Abstract: An airbag module may have an inflator, a cushion, and a housing that contains the inflator and the cushion. The housing has an outer wall formed of a flexible material and a bracket designed to be attached to a vehicle. During deployment, the cushion is expelled out of the housing through the bracket. The inflator remains in the housing and inflation gas is conveyed to the cushion through the housing. The inflator may be retained by flaps wrapped around the inflator and secured to a perpendicularly oriented diffuser of the inflator. Alternatively, the diffuser may extend through an orifice formed in a fabric wall within the housing, and retention portions of the outer wall may be wrapped around the opposite side of the inflator. The airbag module may be mounted in an instrument panel to provide front seat, passenger's side impact protection without requiring a rigid module housing.

    Abstract: An airbag module for installation in a motor vehicle is disclosed. In an exemplary embodiment, the airbag module includes an airbag cushion. A diffuser is positioned inside the airbag cushion. The diffuser includes a diffuser panel that has a plurality of venting apertures disposed throughout. An inflator is provided for inflating the airbag cushion. The inflator includes an inflation gas dissemination portion that releases inflation gases upon activation of the inflator. The inflator is attached to the diffuser in such a way that the inflation gas dissemination portion of the inflator is located inside the airbag cushion.

    Abstract: The reaction canister comprises at least one side wall having an edge, and a housing for at least an inflator and an air bag chute for use in housing a stored air bag and guiding the air bag upon deployment, and being adapted for installation behind, and adjacent to, an automotive panel. A first resilient, impact energy absorbing element is joined to and extends adjacent the edge of the side wall whereby the element is deformable upon impact by forced displacement of the panel to absorb impact energy transmitted to it. The element is sufficiently resilient to absorb at least 5 millimetres of linear displacement with the element comprising a smooth surface adjacent the air bag upon deployment.

    Abstract: The airbag restraint inflator assembly comprises a reaction can having a mounting providing an opening in a first end wall. The opening is adapted to receive and position an inflator within a cavity of the reaction can. An inflator, shorter in dimension than the reaction can, has a generally cylindrical housing with a flangeless base on a first end. The reaction can mounting member is a generally open, right circular cylindrical shaped tube formed by a circular sidewall. The sidewall terminates at one end of it with a radially extending mounting flange having an outer diameter greater than a diameter of the first end wall opening and terminating in a resilient arm on the other end of the sidewall. The mounting member is located in the reaction can first end wall with the resilient arm engaging and holding the inflator housing by biased radial compression force.
