    Abstract: The gas generator assembly for a vehicular airbag includes a hollow, cylindrical filter having a longitudinal central axis and first and second ends, a cylindrical gas generant having first and second ends and retained within the filter coaxial with it and a preload seated against the first end of the gas generant to apply a compressive force. The preload comprise a metallic cup-shaped body having a sidewall seated securely within the first end of the filter and coaxial with it, and a circular base bounded by the sidewall. A metallic contact engages the first end of the gas generant. A metallic spring is intermediate the base and contact for maintaining an axial compressive force against the first end of the gas generant.

A gas generant in the form of at least one cylindrical member has an external dia. equal to the internal dia. of the sidewall. One or more gas generant cylindrical members are positioned to fill the sidewall. The second end cap within the second end of the filter has its barbs extending into and secured within the sidewall to form a unitary, generant loaded, filter assembly.
