    Abstract: New liquid crystalline mixtures comprise: (a) difunctional mesogenic compound(s) (I); (b) reactive compound(s);and (c) optionally additives. New liquid crystalline mixtures comprise: (a) at least one difunctional mesogenic compound of formula Z1-Y1-A1-Y3-M-Y4-A2-Y2-Z2 (I); (b) at least one reactive compound selected from (i) vinyl or allyl ethers, (ii) vinyl or allyl esters of (un)saturated carboxylic acids, (iii) (meth)acrylate esters of mono- or polyfunctional alcohols, (iv) polyester (meth)acrylates, (v) vinyl (hetero)aromatic compounds, and (vi) N-vinyl amide or amine compounds of formula CH2=CH-NR1R2 (II); and (c) optionally further additives. Z1, Z2 = reactive groups (preferably photopolymerizable groups); Y1 - Y4 = direct bond, O, S, OC(O), OC(O)O, C(O)NR, NRC(O), OC(O)NR, NRC(O)O or NRC(O)NR; R = H or 1-4C alkyl; A1, A2 = 1-30C spacers, in which the carbon chains are optionally substituted by one or more Me, F, Cl or Br and interrupted by one or more O, S or non-adjacent NH or N(1-4C alkyl); M = mesogenic group; R1, R2 = -C(O)R3 or R3; R2, R3 = H or 1-4C alkyl; R2 + R3 = optionally unsaturated 3-5C alkylene (in which 1 or 2 CH2 groups are optionally replaced by NH, N(1-4C alkyl), N(6-10C aryl) or O and 1 or 2 CH group are optionally replaced by N).

    Abstract: The present invention relates to a method of marking liquids using at least two markers, wherein said markers absorb in the 600-1200 nm region of the spectrum and reemit fluorescent light and the absorption range of at least one marker overlaps with the absorption range of at least one other marker.The present invention further relates to a method for detecting markers in liquids marked by the method of the invention, which comprises using light sources which emit radiation in the absorption ranges of said markers and detecting the fluorescent light reemitted by said markers, at least one of said light sources emitting radiation in the overlapping absorption range of at least one marker with that of at least one other marker and the number of light sources being less than or equal to the number of markers.The present invention further relates to liquids marked by the method of the invention.

    Abstract: Liquid crystal compositions forming a cholesteric phase with a pitch of less than 450 nm, comprising either at least one polymerizable chiral liquid crystal monomer or a mixture of at least one polymerizable achiral liquid crystal monomer and at least one chiral additive, are used as ultraviolet filters for protecting skin or hair against solar radiation. Liquid crystal compositions forming a cholesteric phase with a pitch of less than 450 nm, comprising either: (a) at least one polymerizable chiral liquid crystal monomer of formula (I); or (b) a mixture of at least one polymerizable achiral liquid crystal monomer of formula (II) and at least one chiral additive, are used as ultraviolet (UV) filters in cosmetic and pharmaceutical compositions for protecting human skin or hair against solar radiation: A -A = spacers with a chain length of 1-30C; Y -Y = bonds, O, S, C(O)O, OC(O), CH=CHC(O)O, OC(O)O, C(O)N(R), N(R)C(O), CH2O, OCH2, CH=N, N=CH or N=N; M , M = mesogenic groups; R = H or 1-4C alkyl; Z = H, 1-4C alkyl or a polymerizable group, at least one being a polymerizable group; Z , Z = H, 1-4C alkyl or polymerizable groups, at least one being a polymerizable group; X = an n-valent chiral group; m, o, p = 0 or 1; n = 1-6. Independent claims are also included: (1) use of the liquid crystal compositions as photostable UV reflectors; (2) use of the liquid crystal compositions as UV stabilizers in cosmetic and pharmaceutical formulations; (3) pigments containing the polymerized liquid crystal compositions.

    Abstract: The invention relates to liquid crystalline substance mixtures which contain at least one compound selected from the group consisting of the compounds of the formula (Ia): Z1-Y1-A1-Y3-M1-Y4-A2-Y2-Z2 and of the formula (Ib): Z3-Y5- A3- Y7-M2-P, wherein the variable P means hydrogen, C1-C15-alkyl or a -Y8-A4-Y6- Z4 group, Z1 to Z4 polymerisable groups, Y1 to Y8 linking groups, A1 to A4 spac er and M1 and M2 mesogenic groups. Said liquid crystalline mixtures of substanc es optionally contain further additives selected from photoinitiators, reactive diluents and diluents, auxiliaries, colourants and stabilisors. The inventio n also relates to the use of such liquid crystalline mixtures of substances as printing ink, for printing or coating substrates, in electrooptic components , for forgery-proof marking of objects and for producing films or coatings.
