Abstract: A catalyst for the oxidation of aromatic or unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbons which contains in the active material from 60 to 99 percent by weight of titanium dioxide and/or zirconium dioxide, from 1 to 40 percent by weight of vanadium pentoxide and up to 6 percent by weight of combined phosphorus, and which contains from 0 to 0.3 percent by weight of phosphorus in the outer layer and more than 0.3 percent up to 6 percent by weight of phosphorus in the remaining catalytic material.

At an external diameter of the catalyst tube bundle ( 18 ) of more than 4 meters, a ratio of tube spacing d to external tube diameter d a of at least 1.3 is preferred.

Abstract: The invention relates to a method for producing phthalic anhydride by the gas phase oxidation of xylene, naphthalene or mixtures thereof in a multitube fixed-bed reactor, which is thermostatted by a heat-transfer medium, on two different fixed-bed catalysts arranged in layers. The invention method is carried out in such a manner that the maximum temperature in the second catalyst layer arranged in the direction of flow is approximately at least 52 DEG C lower than the maximum temperature in the first catalyst layer. The inventive method enables the production of phthalic anhydride with high yields under conditions relevant to practice.
