Abstract: Ordered packing, for a reactor for gas phase oxidation of o-xylene and/or naphthalene with molecular oxygen to form phthalic acid anhydride, has flow channels parallel to the long axis of reactor that fills the reactor cross-section to an edge gap whereby the maximum width of the edge gap measured in the plane at right angles to the long axis of the reactor is less than the hydraulic diameter of the flow channels. An ordered packing (1), for a reactor for the gas phase oxidation of o-xylene and/or naphthalene with a molecular oxygen containing gas stream to form phthalic acid anhydride, has flow channels (2) parallel to the long axis of the reactor that fill the reactor cross-section to an edge gap (3) whereby the maximum width of the edge gap (3) measured in the plane at right angles to the long axis of the reactor is less than the hydraulic diameter of the flow channels (2), preferably less than half of the hydraulic diameter of the flow channels (2) and the packing (1) is coated with an oxidation catalyst for phthalic acid anhydride. Independent claims are included for processes for the application or coating of an oxidation catalyst onto the packing (1) by dipping or spraying a suspension containing the catalyst or catalyst precursor onto the packing (1).

Abstract: Molecular nitrogen is used as a diluent gas in the partial oxidation stage of a 3-stage method for the production of acrolein and acrylic acid from propane by: (A) partial gas-phase dehydrogenation; (B) removal of hydrogen and partial gas-phase oxidation of propene; and (C) separation of product and recycling of unreacted propane to stage (A). Acrolein and acrylic acid are produced from propane by: (A) partial gas-phase dehydrogenation of propane in presence of a heterogeneous catalyst to form a mixture (A) containing molecular hydrogen, propene and unreacted propane; (B) removing at least some of the hydrogen from the components other than propane and propene to give a mixture (A'), feeding (A') into oxidation reactor(s) and subjecting the propylene to selective, gas-phase partial oxidation in presence of heterogeneous catalyst to give a gas mixture (B) containing acrolein and acrylic acid; and (C) separating the required product and recycling unreacted propane (at least) to stage (A). In this process, molecular nitrogen is used as diluent gas in the partial oxidation stage (B).

A method for the production of phthalic anhydride (I) by gas-phase oxidation of xylene and/or naphthalene in a thermostatted tube-bank reactor on 3 or more solid-bed catalysts in 3 different layers involves carrying out the process in such a way that the peak temperature (T2) in the second catalyst layer (in the direction of flow) is up to 50 degrees C below the peak temperature (T1) in the first layer and the peak temperature (T3) in the third layer is 30-100 degrees C below T1.
