Abstract: Aq. polymer dispersions (X) are prepd. by radical aq. emulsion polymerisation of a mixt. contg. at least one gp. of ethylenic unsatd. radical polymerisable monomers. The mixt. comprises 30 - 90 wt.% monomers (A) with a min. solubility of 5 wt.% in water at the chosen polymerisation temp. and pressure (w.r.t. mixt.) and 10 - 70 wt.% monomers (B) with solubility in water less than 5 wt.% under the same conditions. The mixt. contains no surfactant monomers (C). Some or all of the emulsion polymerisation takes place in a dispersant medium comprising water and an organic solvent (S) whose solubility in water is max. 10 wt.% under the above conditions. The dispersant comprises at least 20 wt.% (S) and there is sufficient (S) present to form aq. and organic phases, but the water / (S) mass ratio is not greater than 1 : 2. Also claimed are (i) the prepn. of (X) by the above method; and (ii) oil-in-water emulsions contg. (D).

Abstract: The invention concerns powdery porous polymers which contain N-vinylimidazol units and are obtained by the radically initiated polymerization in the manner of precipitation polymerization of: a) between 5 and 100 wt.% of at least one N-vinylimidazol of formula (I) in which R , R and R are identical or different and stand for H, C1 - C4 alkyl, monomers of formula (II), in which R and R are identical or different and stand for H, C1 - C4 alkyl or form with one another a ring comprising between 3 and 5 methylene groups, N-vinyloxazolidone, N-vinyltriazol, 4-vinylpyridine-N-oxide or a mixture of said monomers; b) between 0 and 95 wt.% of other copolymerizable monoethylenically unsaturated monomers; and c) between 0 and 50 wt.% of at least one monomer with at least two ethylenically unsaturated non-conjugated double bonds; in an aqueous solution which contains between 0.5 and 30 wt.% of at least one electrolyte and, relative to the monomers used, between 0.5 and 80 wt.% of at least one surfactant. The invention further concerns processes for their preparation and the use of the resultant powdery porous polymers containing N-vinylimidazol units as washing agent additives in order to inhibit dye-transfer during the washing process.

Abstract: Polymers (I), used in hair styling agents, are prepd. by radical-initiated copolymerisation of: (A) 5-50 wt.% (quat.) 1-vinyl imidazole; (B) 20-80 wt.% N-vinyl caprolactam; (C) 10-60 wt.% N-vinyl pyrrolidone; and (D) 0-30 wt.% additional radical copolymerisable monomer which forms a homopolymer with a Tg > 20 degrees C, with the proviso that the polymer is quaternised if (A) is 1-vinyl imidazole. Cosmetic hair and skin formulations contg. (I) as active ingredients are also claimed. Pref. (A) is 3-methyl-1-vinyl imidazolinium chloride or -methyl sulphate, or 3-ethyl-1-vinyl imidazolinium methyl sulphate. (D) is tert.-butyl acrylate. (I) is prepd. by copolymerisation of a mixt. comprising 10-30 wt.% 1-vinyl imidazole quaternised with di(m)ethyl sulphate as component (A), 40-60 wt.% (B), and 30-50 wt.% (C).

Abstract: The use of crosslinked copolymers obtainable by precipitation polymerization of monomer mixtures comprising(a) monoethylenically unsaturated C3-C8-carboxylic acids, their anhydrides or mixtures of said carboxylic acids and anhydrides,(b) compounds with at least 2 non-conjugated ethylenic double bonds in the molecule as crosslinkers and, where appropriate,(c) other monoethylenically unsaturated monomers which are copolymerizable with monomers (a) and (b),in the presence of free-radical polymerization initiators and from 0.1 to 20% by weight, based on the monomers used, of saturated, nonionic surface-active compounds, as stabilizer in oil-in-water emulsions in amounts of from 0.01 to 5% of the weight of the emulsions, and cosmetic and pharmaceutical formulations based on oil-in-water emulsions which contain said precipitation polymers.

Abstract: Polymers (A) which include in their structure units of formula (II) are used as dye-transfer inhibitors during washing of textiles. R1= H or 1-20C alkyl; R2= H or Me; X= OCO, NR3CO or COOCH2; R3= H or Me. Pref X= OCO or NR3CO. Also new are washing compsns based on surfactants, opt with builders and other usual ingredients, also contg 0.1-10 wt% (A). Pref (A) have no average mol wt 1600-8.6 million (pref 1600-1 million) and are made by reacting the monomer (I), opt with a wide variety of ethylenically unsatd comonomers, pref 1-4C alkyl (meth)acrylates, (meth)acrylamide, (meth)acrylonitrile or 1-4C alkyl vinyl ether. USE - (A) prevent transfer of dye from coloured to white (or pale) textiles during the entire washing process. (A) are already known (WO-A-90/05131) to form complexes with pharmaceuticals and cpds contg phenol gps (for controlled release of active ingredient) and to have higher affinity for iodine than PVP.

Abstract: The use of copolymers obtainable by the radically initiated polymerisation of A) 50 to 99.9 wt % of an olefinically unsaturated C3 to C5 monocarboxylic acid, an olefinically unsaturated C4 to C8 bicarboxylic acid or its anhydride, or a mixture of such carboxylic acids or carboxylic acid anhydrides with B) 0.1 to 50 wt % of one or more long-chained compounds with isolated multiple C-C bonds from the group (1) mono or polyunsaturated C8 to C30 monocarboxylic acids which may have additional hydroxyl groups and their alkaline metal and earth alkaline metal salts, alkyl esters, amides, sorbitane esters, glycerine esters and polyglycerine esters, (2) mono or polyunsaturated aliphatic C8 to C30 amines, (3) mono or polyunsaturated C8 to C30 alcohols and esters thereof with saturated C1 to C4 monocarboxylic acids, (4) to (C8 to C30 alkyl) vinyl ether which may incorporate up to 25 alkylene oxide units, and (5) final and medium-position C13 to C30 alkenes; C) 0 to 49.9 wt % of other copolymerisable monomers, and D) 0 to 10 wt % of one or more compounds with at least two olefinically unsaturated groups in the molecule as cross-linking agents, as thickening or dispersing agents, especially in cosmetic and pharmaceutical preparations.
