Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a water-absorbing foamy crosslinked polymer.
SOLUTION: The process for producing the polymer comprises a first step (I) of foaming a polymerizable aqueous mixture of (a) a monoethylene unsaturated monomer having an acid radical in which at least its 50 mol% is neutralized, (b) optionally other monoethylene unsaturated monomer, (c) a crosslinking agent, (d) an initiator, (e) 0.1-20 wt.% of at least one kind of surfactant, (f) optionally at least one kind of solubilizer, and (g) optionally, a thickener, foam stabilizer, polymerization regulator, filler and/or foam nucleus-forming agent, and of dispersing fine foams of inactive gas into the radical to carry out foaming, and a second step (II) of forming a foamy hydrogel and optionally adjusting a water content of the foamy polymer to 1-60 wt.% to polymerize the foamed mixture.

Abstract: Copolymers may be produced by radical-initiated copolymerisation of monomer mixtures composed of (a) 60 to 99 % by weight 1-vinylpyrrolidone, 1-vinylimidazole or their mixtures; (b) 1 to 40 % by weight nitrogenated, basic, ethylenically unsaturated monomers as free bases, salts or in quaternary form and if required (c) up to 20 % by weight of other monoethylenically unsaturated monomers. These copolymers are used as additives for washing agents to inhibit fading during washing. Also disclosed are washing agents containing such polymers, as well as polymers which may be produced by radical-initiated polymerisation of (a) 1-vinylpyrrolidone, 1-vinylimidazole, 1-vinylimidazolium compounds or their mixtures and if required (b) other nitrogenated, basic, ethylenically unsaturated monomers as free bases, salts or in quaternary form, and/or (c) other monoethylenically unsaturated monomers, in an aqueous medium in the presence of water-soluble proteins. A process is disclosed for preparing these polymers by polymerisation of the monomers (a) and if required (b) and/or (c) in an aqueous medium in the presence of water-soluble proteins. For 100 parts by weight of the monomers used for polymerisation, 0.5 to 400 parts by weight of proteins are used.

Abstract: The invention concerns water-absorbent cellular crosslinked-polymer materials produced by (I) foaming a polymerizable aqueous mixture containing: (a) acid-group-containing monoethylenically unsaturated monomers which have been neutralized to at least 50 mol %; (b) optionally, other monoethylenically unsaturated monomers; (c) crosslinking agents; (d) initiators; (e) 0.1 to 20 % by wt. of at least one surfactant; (f) optionally, at least one solubilizer and (g) optionally, thickeners, foam stabilizers, polymerization-control agents, fillers and/or cell-nucleation agents, the foaming being carried out by dispersing throughout the mixture fine bubbles of a gas which is inert to radicals, and (II) polymerizing the foamed mixture to form a cellular hydrogel and adjusting the water content of the cellular hydrogel to 1 to 45 % by wt. The invention also concerns methods of producing such polymer materials and their use in personal-hygiene articles used to absorb body fluids and in bandage material used to cover injuries.

Abstract: Polymers (I), used in hair styling agents, are prepd. by radical-initiated copolymerisation of: (A) 5-50 wt.% (quat.) 1-vinyl imidazole; (B) 20-80 wt.% N-vinyl caprolactam; (C) 10-60 wt.% N-vinyl pyrrolidone; and (D) 0-30 wt.% additional radical copolymerisable monomer which forms a homopolymer with a Tg > 20 degrees C, with the proviso that the polymer is quaternised if (A) is 1-vinyl imidazole. Cosmetic hair and skin formulations contg. (I) as active ingredients are also claimed. Pref. (A) is 3-methyl-1-vinyl imidazolinium chloride or -methyl sulphate, or 3-ethyl-1-vinyl imidazolinium methyl sulphate. (D) is tert.-butyl acrylate. (I) is prepd. by copolymerisation of a mixt. comprising 10-30 wt.% 1-vinyl imidazole quaternised with di(m)ethyl sulphate as component (A), 40-60 wt.% (B), and 30-50 wt.% (C).

Abstract: The invention concerns binders containing: A) an aminotriazine derivative in which the triazine primary amino groups are methylolated on average with at least one mol of formaldehyde per mole of primary amino groups and these methylol groups are etherified on average with at least 0.5 mole primary alcohol per mole of methylol group, and the primary alcohols are a mixture containing: a) 0.5 to 99.5 mol % of a C1-C4 alkanol and b) 99.5 to 0.5 mol % of an alcohol of the formula (I) R -O-[R -O]n-R -OH, in which R stands for a C1-C24 alkyl group or a C6-C12 aryl group which may optionally be substituted by one to three C1-C8 alkyl groups, and R and R , independently of each other, stand for a C2-C8 alkylene group, and n means an integer from 1 to 100, or a mixture of higher-boiling alcohols having a boiling point of more than 120 DEG C at 1 bar, which contains at least 10 mol %, relative to the higher-boiling alcohols, of alcohols of formula I; and B) a radical polymer, which can be crosslinked with the aminotriazine derivative, a polycondensate or polymer additive.

Abstract: The production of polymer powder comprises drying an aqueous dispersion of a polymer (A) in which the dispersed particles have a positive or negative electric charge on the surface. The process comprises adding, as auxiliary drying agent, a polyelectrolyte (B) which, in its dissociated form as poly-ion and counter-ion is soluble in the aqueous dispersion medium and in which the charge on the poly-ion is opposite to the surface charge on the dispersed polymer. Also claimed are: (i) the polymer powder obtained by this process; and (ii) the polymer powder containing charged spherical particles of (A) and a polyelectrolyte (B).
