    Abstract: The invention relates to a degreaser for treating hides, skins, pelts and other intermediates in leather and fur manufacture and also wool or related proteinaceous materials that is based on nonionic surfactants of the type of alcohol alkoxylates, comprising alcohol alkoxylates obtained by reaction of at least one alcohol ROH with n mol of at least one alkylene oxide per mole of alcohol ROH, where R is an alkyl radical of 5 to 30 carbon atoms which has a main chain, of 4 to 29 carbon atoms that has at least one C 1 - to C 10 -alkyl branch attached in the chain middle; the alkylene oxide has 2 to 6 carbon atoms, and n is an integer from 1 to 100. The invention further relates to a process for degreasing hide, skins, pelts and other intermediates of leather and fur manufacture and wool or related proteinaceous materials, which comprises using a degreaser according to the present invention, and to the use of the degreasers.

    Abstract: The invention relates to a degreasing agent for treating skins, fur, limed skins and other intermediate products in leather and fur production, and for treating wool or related protein substances, based on non-ionic surfactants of the alcohol alcoxylate type. Alcohol alcoxylates are used which are obtained by reaction with at least one alcohol ROH with n mols of at least one alkylene oxide per mol of alcohol ROH, wherein R represents an alkyl radical containing between 5 and 30 carbon atoms, and having a main chain which contains between 4 and 29 carbon atoms and is branched in the centre thereof with at least one C1 - C10 alkyl radical; the alkylene oxide comprises between 2 and 6 carbon atoms; and n represents a whole number between 1 and 100. The invention also relates to a method for degreasing skins, fur, limed skins and other intermediate products in leather and fur production, and for treating wool or related protein substances, a degreasing agent according to the present invention being used. The invention further relates to the use of said degreasing agent.

    Abstract: The invention relates to a method for reducing the content of small quantiti es of C1-C2-aldehydes formed from organic compounds with -CH2-CHR-O- and/or -CH 2- CH(OH)-groups (R=H, C1-C4-alkyl) as a result of radical action, to 1 ppm by adding compounds which react with said aldehyde groups. Substances with the aforementioned groups also include many emulsifiers and protective colloids used in polymer chemistry, such as polyethylene glycols, polyvinyl alcohols or products of ethoxylation of long-chained alcohols, phenols or amines. The inventive method is particularly useful for treating polymer dispersions produced by radical polymerisation of monomers in the presence of these type s of emulsifiers or protective colloids and enables the production of aldehyde - free polymer dispersions which can then be used for sanitary and hygiene products.
