    Abstract: N,N'-Disubstd. 5-iminopyrrolidin-2-ones of formula (I) in which the gps. R1 (same or different) = 1-20C aliphatic residue, 3-10C aromatic residue or 4-12C araliphatic residue which may be substd. by substituents which are inert under the prevailing reaction conditions, are prepd. by reacting a beta-cyanopropionic acid ester of formula (II) NC-CH2-CH2-CO-OR2 (II) in which R2 = 1-20C alkyl, 7-12C aralkyl or 6-10C aryl gp., with an amine of formula (III) R1-NH2 (III). USE/ADVANTAGE - The process is similar and more economical to carry out than previous processes and is suitable for industrial scale operation. High yields of (I) of good purity can be obtd.. The (I) can be catalytically hydrogenated to give N-substd. 2-pyrrolidones, useful as solvents and extraction agents.
