    Abstract: In the distillation of styrene in at least one distillation column in the presence of a nitrophenol capable of inhibiting polymerization, the nitrophenol which is added to the feed flowing to the column and which accumulates in the residues at the bottom of the column is recovered by reaction of the residues with ammonia to form the ammonium nitrophenolate, and the nitrophenol is recycled to the column feed in the form of the ammonium nitrophenolate. The contents of the base of the column may be treated with gaseous ammonia and the precipitated ammonium nitrophenolate separated and added, in solid form, to the feed flowing to the column.
