    Abstract: A process for the production of polyether-ols (I) by the addition of ethylene oxide (EO) and optionally higher alkylene oxides (HAO) to (a) aromatic amines, comprising (1) reacting amine (a) with EO in presence of 0-0.05 wt% catalyst and in the absence of substances with terminal hydroxyl groups and/or water (b), then (2) adding a further 0.05-0.5 wt% catalyst plus EO and/or HAO and completing the reaction, optionally with the addition of (b). Also claimed are (i) polyether-ols (I) obtained by this process, (ii) polyisocyanate polyaddition products obtained by reacting (I) with polyisocyanates (II) and optionally chain extenders and/or crosslinkers, catalysts, blowing agents and other additives etc., and (iii) rigid foam containing (I).

    Abstract: Production of polyether polyols comprises use of a multi-metal cyanide complex catalyst in a tall cylindrical reactor having a downward facing spray nozzle in the upper reactor portion, through which the educts and reaction mixture are fed and an outlet, preferably in the lower portion of the reactor to recirculate the reaction mixture via an external circuit and equalizing reservoir. A process for the production of polyether polyols (I) by reaction of diols or polyols with ethylene oxide, propylene oxide and/or butylene oxide in the presence of a multi-metal cyanide complex catalyst (II) comprises carrying out the reaction in a tall cylindrical reactor having a downward facing spray nozzle in the upper reactor portion, through which the educts and reaction mixture are fed, and an outlet, preferably in the lower portion of the reactor, through which the reaction mixture is fed by means of a pump through an external circuit via an equalizing reservoir to the spray nozzle. The external circuit comprises a concentric pipe stretching the entire length of the reactor excluding the reactor ends and contains a heat exchanger integrated within the annulus.

    Abstract: Highly functional aromatic polyisocyanates are prepared by reacting aromatic polyisocyanates, if required as a mixture with further mono- and/or polyisocyanates, with addition of catalytic acidic substances and water, by a process wherein the aromatic polyisocyanates used comprise at least one tolylene diisocyanate and the catalytic acidic substance used is at least one alkyl and/or aralkyl phosphate, and the process is carried out in such a way that the water is added with a temperature/time gradient increase from 5 to 60°/hour and until an isocyanate modification of the starting NCO terminal groups from 1 to 80% is established. The highly functional aromatic polyisocyanates prepared by this process are used for the preparation of polyurethane foams, in particular flexible polyurethane foams.
