Abstract: Thermoplastic moulding materials (I) are claimed, contg. (A) 5-90 wt.% polyphenylene ether (PPE) Mw 8000-30,000, (B) 5-90 wt.% impact-modified styrene polymer contg. (b1) 60-80 wt.% hard polystyrene matrix and (b2) 20-40 wt.% soft phase with encapsulated particle morphology and mean particle dia. (d50) = 0.1-0.7 micron, and (C) 0-60 wt.% normal additives. Pref. (b2) has d50 (volume average 0.2-0.4 micron, and is prepd. by polymerisation of the hard matrix monomer (pref. styrene) in the presence of a linear 2-block copolymer of 36-45 wt.% styrene and 55-64 wt.% butadiene, pref. with a tapered transition and mean mol.wt. 180,000-250,000, contg. 30-32 wt.% polystyrene block with mol.wt. 50,000-70,000. (A) has Mw 12,000-25,000. Pref. (A) is poly-(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene ether) (PPE) or a homologue thereof. (B) consists of particles of soft phase encapsulating a single particle of the hard matrix, as described, e.g. in Angew. Makromol. Chemie, 58/59 (1977) 175. (C) can be different impact modifiers, fire retardants, pigments, etc. USE/ADVANTAGE - Used for the prodn. of fibres, film and moulded prods. (claimed). Also claimed are moulded prods. obtd. from (I). The invention provides thermoplastic HIPS/PPE moulding materials with improved surface gloss, suitable for the prodn. of injection moulded parts for electrical machines and office equipment etc.
