Abstract: HOE 90/F 128 Process for producing an optical coupler for polymer optical waveguides Process for producing an optical coupler for polymer optical waveguides by arranging the optical waveguides in the same sense and bundling them by means of a plastic shrink-on sleeve. In this process, two to 105 polymer optical waveguides are arranged in the same sense and bundled and a plastic tube is put over the mixing region. Then a piece of plastic shrink-on sleeve is pushed over the plastic tube and the shrink-on sleeve is heated to a temperature at which it contracts. The shrinkage temperature of the shrink-on sleeve is inside the thermoelastic temperature range of the plastic tube. The optical waveguide bundle may be stretched during or after heating.

Abstract: of the disclosure: HOE 86/F 049 Optical waveguides of plastic usually consist of a core and a jacket, the core material having a higher refractive index than the jacket material. A suitable core material is a fluorine-free polymer and a suitable jacket material is a fluorine-containing polymer, which can also contain deuterium. The optical waveguides can be produced by passing a polymer rod through a solution of the jacket polymer and then removing the solvent. The optical waveguides are particularly suitable for the transmission of data with the aid of light waves with a wavelength of 500 to 750 nm.

Phenyl alpha -fluoroacrylates which are substituted on the phenyl radical can be prepared by hydroxymethylation of dimethyl alpha -fluoromalonates, decarboxylation and dehydration of the resultant dimethyl alpha -hydroxymethyl- alpha -fluoromalonate and esterification of the resultant alpha -fluoroacrylic acid with substituted phenols. The substituted phenyl alpha -fluoroacrylates are colourless liquids or colourless solids which are polymerisable. They are suitable as starting material for the preparation of fluorinated polymers.
