Abstract: Surveillance systems and methods 230 can include detecting a number of interactions within a building 232, determining an event based on the number of interactions 234, and sending a message to a number of contacts relating to the event 236. The system can also comprise a computing device hub including instructions to: detect a number of interactions with a first area; receive a number of detected interactions from sensors within a second area; determine a response based on the number of detected interactions from the first and second areas, wherein the response includes altering a number of environmental settings; determine a number of contacts based on the response; and send a message to the number of contacts. The interaction are detected by sensors, these can range from temperature to motion sensors. The contacts could be the emergency services encase of a break-in or fire, or even the home-owner. The message sent could be a recorded audio message. The environmental settings change could be the temperature settings of the building or area.

Abstract: An actuator device controlling the shape of a flexible surface having a quasi-continuum in a plurality of locations. The device includes a plurality of individual cells arranged in an array for contact with the flexible surface. The cells comprise a cell body having an upper film portion and a lower film portion and an open central portion. The upper film portion is in contact with the flexible surface. A post is mounted in the open central portion and fixedly attached to the upper film portion and the lower film portion, the post defining a vertical axis of movement. The upper and lower film portions have electrodes mounted thereon respectively, positioned on the face of the upper and lower film portions and facing each other. A central diaphragm has electrodes on its outer surfaces and an open central portion surrounding the post A power supply operably connected to the electrodes for causing selective cooperative electrostatic activation between them to move the post along the vertical axis to cause the upper film portion to move that portion of the flexible surface in which the upper film portion is in contact. In a preferred embodiment, the cell body has a circular cross section so that the post moves vertically upward and downward to raise or lower the portion of the flexible surface in contact with the upper film portion upon application of electrostatic potential between the electrodes.

Abstract: A method is provided for estimating the location of a portable device. The method includes detecting and measuring a signal parameter from at least some of a plurality of location anchor transceivers and enhanced location anchor transceivers with a portable transceiver including a gas detector. A location engine of the location manager module calculates an estimated location of the portable transceiver based upon the signal measurements and respective predetermined locations of the plurality of location anchor transceivers and enhanced location anchor transceivers. The location engine calculates an estimated location of the plurality of enhanced location anchor transceivers based upon the signal measurements and the respective predetermined locations of the location anchor transceivers and enhanced location anchor transceivers, and a location error for the portable transceiver and each of the enhanced location anchor transceivers is calculated based upon the estimated location and predetermined location of the enhanced location anchor transceiver.

Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for estimating the location of a portable device. The method includes the steps of providing a plurality of location anchor transceivers and a plurality of enhanced location anchor transceivers within a region, each of the plurality of location anchor transceivers and enhanced location anchor transceivers operating from respective predetermined locations, a portable transceiver within the region detecting and measuring a signal parameter of a signal from at least some of the plurality of location anchor transceivers and enhanced location anchor transceivers within the region, a location engine determining a location of the portable transceiver based upon the signal measurements of the portable transceiver and the respective predetermined locations of the plurality of location anchor transceivers and enhanced location anchor transceivers within the region, each of the plurality of enhanced location anchor transceivers detecting and measuring a signal parameter of a signal from at least some of the plurality of location anchor transceivers and other enhanced location anchor transceivers, the location engine receiving the measured signal parameters from each of the plurality of enhanced location anchor transceivers, the location engine calculating an estimated location for each of the plurality of enhanced location anchor transceivers from the measured signal parameters and the location engine calculating a location error for each of the plurality of enhanced location anchor transceivers based upon the estimated location and predetermined location of the enhanced location anchor transceiver.

Abstract: An optical detection system for flow cytometry that uses two or more light sources positioned laterally at different distances from the central axis of the flow stream for providing light through different parts of the flow stream. By using two or more light sources, the particle position can be detected, and the alignment and width of the core stream can be monitored and controlled. In addition, the velocity and size of the particles can be more accurately determined than when only a single light source is used.
