Abstract: A semiconductor laser light source acts as its own photodetector in a combined system. Variations in the light returning to the laser cause detectable variations in the laser drive current. In an optical disk storage system, these variations are produced by dithering a focusing lens and the detected current variation is analysed and fed back to control focusing of the laser on the disk.

Abstract: The present invention relates generally to a new interface and a method for making the same, and more particularly, to an electrical transmission-line interface and a method for making the same. On a substrate having semiconductors, a driver or receiver circuit is provided to interface with an electrical transmission-line. Integral means for the electrical transmission-line alignment, support and transit through a sealed environment is also provided. A fluid tight seal can also be provided for the various components that are in the interior of the housing. Variable time-delay means is provided for a computer clock system or other microwave applications.

Abstract: Disclosed are a microlens array, and a method of positioning and aligning the microlens array on another device. Generally, the microlens array comprises an array of injection molded microlens elements, and a supporting flange. Each of the microlens elements has a generally spheroid or spherical shape, and the supporting flange connects together the array of microlens elements to facilitate positioning that array of lenses on a printed circuit board, semiconductor package or wafer. This array is well suited for use with vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs); and, in particular, the preferred embodiment of the invention addresses the problem of VCSEL laser array alignment by using arrays of microlenses elements fabricated by injection molding.

Abstract: A wavelength-locked loop servo-control circuit and methodology that enables real time mutual alignment of an electromagnetic signal having a peaked spectrum function including a center wavelength and a wavelength selective device implementing a peaked passband function including a center wavelength, in a system employing electromagnetic waves. The circuit comprises a mechanism for applying a dither modulation signal at a dither modulation frequency to the electromagnetic signal, and inputting the dither modulated electromagnetic signal to the wavelength selective device; a mechanism for converting a portion of the dither modulated electromagnetic signal to an electric feedback signal; a mechanism for continuously comparing the feedback signal with said dither modulation signal and generating an error signal representing a difference between a frequency characteristic of the feedback signal and a dither modulation frequency; and a mechanism for adjusting the peaked spectrum function of the electromagnetic signal according to the error signal. The center wavelength of the electromagnetic signal and the wavelength selective device center wavelength become aligned when the frequency characteristic of the feedback signal is two times the dither modulation frequency.

Abstract: Una estructura de montaje óptico para la conexión de una serie de áreas bidimensionales de matrices de VCSEL a un cuadro, que comprende: una matriz de VCSEL (10) que contiene dicha serie de áreas de VCSEL (15-i), estado rodeada dicha serie de áreas por una costura de adhesión metalizada (12) sobre una superficie superior de la misma; una unidad de transferencia óptica de precisión (20) que contiene una costura de adhesión (22) correspondiente sobre su parte inferior que corresponde a dicha costura de adhesión metalizada (12) sobre dicha matriz de VCSEL (10), estando dispuesta dicha costura (22) correspondiente sobre la parte inferior de un reborde (23), de manera que la alineación entre dicha matriz (10) y dicha unidad de transferencia óptica (20) es proporcionada por el reborde (23) que está adaptado para formar un borde vertical (13) de un escalón que es decapado en la parte superior de la matriz (10); y una primera serie de salientes (24) sobre una superficie superior de dicha unidad detransferencia óptica (20); conteniendo dicha unidad de transferencia óptica (20) medios de transferencia óptica (25-i) para transferir radiación emitida desde dicha serie de áreas de VCSEL (15- i), por lo que la limitación de la tolerancia para dichos medios de transferencia óptica (25-i) es 10 m, y la limitación de la tolerancia para la distancia vertical entre dichos medios de transferencia óptica (25-i) y dicha matriz de VCSEL (10) es 50 m; y un conector óptico (30) enchufable que tiene una unidad de transmisión óptica (35) insertada en una cavidad del mismo, una serie de receptáculos de interbloqueo (34) sobre una superficie inferior del mismo que coincide con dicha primera serie de salientes (24) sobre dicha superficie superior de dicha unidad de transferencia óptica (20) y una segunda serie de salientes (36) sobre una superficie superior de dicho conector óptico (30) enchufable para coincidencia con dicho cuadro.
