Abstract: A method and device for determining a feline immunodeficiency virus infectio n or vaccination in an animal. The method includes contacting a biological sample from a felid with various FIV polypeptides and determining the bindin g of antibodies in the sample of the polypeptides. The determination of whethe r an animal is infected with FIV or has been vaccinated against FIV can be determined by measuring the animal~s immune response to an FIV env polypeptide. A device for detecting FIV antibodies is provided.

Abstract: We disclose methods for determining whether a feline is infected with feline immunodeficiency virus ("FIV"). The methods involve the use of an antibody-binding composition that includes two enhanced polypeptides, one containing an immunogenic fragment of the FIV gag precursor p55 and the other containing an immunogenic fragment of the FIV env precursor gp130. Also disclosed are devices for practising these methods.
