Abstract:
This invention relates to a 1-8 % cross-linked terpolymer of a C1-C4 alkyl vinyl ether, maleic anhydride and a hydrophobic C6 to C18 alkyl vinyl ether in a critical molar ratio of from 1-3:1:0.01-0.20, which polymer has a pH of from about 4 to about 11, a Brookfield viscosity of from about 10,000 to about 150,000 cps and is characterized as having desirable salt tolerance enhanced viscosity, stability, low residual monomers and enhanced use characteristics. The invention also relates to liquid or aqueous gel compositions of the cross-linked terpolymer containing a salt and a method for the preparation of said cross-linked terpolymer gel.
Abstract:
A hair spray composition of 80 % or less VOC includes a fixative which is the half-ester of a copolymer of maleic anhydride and methyl vinyl ether having advantageous physical and performance properties even at low fixative levels. The copolymer is made by polymerizing the monomers at a selected temperature in the presence of a predetermined amount of a polymerization initiator whose decomposition fragments are soluble in hydroalcoholic solutions containing high levels of water. The composition is clear and without precipitate formation, has a low weight average molecular weight and a narrow molecular weight distribution, or polydispersity, affording a low solution viscosity. The composition also forms a spray pattern of small particle size, providing clear, hard fixative films with superior adhesion to the hair of the user, an advantageous high humidity curl retention (hold), and low tack and dry times, in both pump and aerosol products.
Abstract:
Anhydrous and low VOC hydroalcoholic hair spray compositions including 80 % or less VOC components, and a hair fixative polymer, and, optionally, water, ethanol and/or a propellant, contains gum rosin as a performance enhancing additive in an amount up to about 1 % by weight of the composition. The presence of gum rosin improves use performance characteristics particularly reduced tack period, decreased drying time, and increased stiffness.
Abstract:
A low VOC (volatile organic compounds) hair spray composition having a combination of desirable user performance characteristics is described herein. The hair fixative resin in the composition is a terpolymer of 40-75 % by weight of a vinyl lactam, preferably vinyl pyrrolidone, 15-40 % of a polymerizable carboxylic acid, preferably acrylic acid or methacrylic acid, and 5-25 % of a hydrophobic monomer, preferably a long chain alkyl (C8-C24) acrylate, methacrylate, acrylamide or methacrylamide. The terpolymer has a K-value of 30-55, preferably 40-50, which provides compositions having good sprayability in both pump and aerosol form, and small, fine spray particles.
Abstract:
This invention relates to a process for the production of substantially odorless, color stable N-vinyl heterocyclic copolymer which includes contacting alcohol solution of the copolymer, under reduced pressure, with water and a reducing agent selected from the group of a nitrogen containing borane complex, sulfurous acid and an alkali metal salt of sulfurous acid and recovering an aqueous, 10-80 wt.% solids solution of the copolymer having a substantially color free stability for a period of more than a year. The invention also relates to an N-vinyl heterocyclic copolymer in substantially pure deionized water or in aqueous alcoholic solution which exhibits significantly reduced color and odor and which is obtained by contacting an alcohol-copolymer mixture with water and a nitrogen containing, trivalent boron complex compound and stripping alcohol from the resulting mixture.
Abstract:
A composition comprising a long-chain alkylpyrrolidone, a surfactant, and film-forming water-soluble polymer wherein the amounts of the components are such that on dilution with water, a clear liquid is formed. The composition may be used as a medium for agriculturally active ingredients as well as other active ingredients which are suitable for film formation, e.g., wood protectants, and the like. Also, emulsion concentrates of water-insoluble film-forming polymers are disclosed which can be utilized to form water-resistant films of active ingredients, such as, agriculturally active chemicals. Methods for preparation and use of the emulsion concentrates are disclosed.
