Abstract: PURPOSE: To obtain the subject ester excellent in waving function and the durability of waves, causing little deteriorating effect on damaged hair, and having low degree smell, and excellent compatibility and safety when used as a reducing agent for a permanent-wave treatment composition consisting of a mixture of specific isomers. CONSTITUTION: A mixture of isomers consisting of 3- hydroxybutylmonothioglycolate of formula I and 3-hydroxy-l- methylpropylmonothioglycolate of formula II. The mixture is obtained e.g. by reacting a thioglycolic acid or a thioglycolic acid alkyl ester of formula III (R is H or a 1-4C alkyl) with 1,3-butanediol of formula IV. The reaction is preferably carried out by using a compound of formula IV in an amount of 1.5-3 equivalents based on a compound of formula III at 80-180 deg.C while the generated water is being removed. Further, a compounding ratio of the mixture to a permanent-wave treatment composition is preferably 5-5-wt.%.

The amounts of the components A and B are preferably 0.5-20wt.% and 0.05-10wt.%, respectively.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject composition having good wave characteristics, capable of reducing the damage to hair and usable not only for permanent waving of the hair but also for straight permanent waving of the hair by including a reducing agent and pentanediol. SOLUTION: This composition is obtained by including (A) one or more kinds of reducing agents (e.g. thioglycolic acid or a thiolactic acid) and (B) 1,2-pentanediol in an amount of 0.1-10 wt.% based on the whole composition. A cationic surfactant such as a quaternary ammonium compound (e.g. cetyltrimethylammonium chloride) in an amount of 0.05-5 wt.% is preferably contained in the composition. When the composition is used for permanent waving, 1-5 wt.% of a 10-22C aliphatic alcohol is preferably contained to provide about 500-10,000 mPa.s viscosity measured with a Brookfield viscometer at 20 deg.C.

Abstract: PURPOSE: To measure the condition of hairs simply and quickly by immersing the hairs in a specific aqueous solution of dye, and measuring the color density of the solution. CONSTITUTION: Hairs are immersed in an aqueous solution of pH1-5 containing at least one sort of anion dye, and the change in the color density of the solution is measured ocularly. As the anion dye, a dye which develops color at a pH between 1-5 and is capable of being adsorbed to a damaged hair, for example, 1-(4-sulfo-1-phenylazo)-2-naphthol-6-sulphonic acid or its disodium salt particularly suitable for measurement of the damaged degree of the hairs after being subjected to oxidation processes frequently, is cited. The concentration of the dye in a solution to measure the acid-bonding ability of keratin fiber on the surfaces of a non-damaged hair should preferably be 10 -10mM, while the pH of the aqueous solution of the dye be approx. 2.5. Further, adding of various solvents may heighten the measuring accuracy for the condition of dyed hairs.

Calcium chloride, magnesium nitrate or zinc sulfate may be cited as the bivalent metal salt. Three of 1,3-butanediol, benzyl alcohol and benzyloxyethanol are preferably used as the organic compound.
