    Abstract: An improved plain old telephone service (POTS) line card that may be direct ly connected to a customer line that is also connected to a digital subscriber line access module. A second order filter is added to the front end of the POTS line car d in order to attenuate XDSL signals and to lower its amplitude. A new digital signal processor (DSP) includes further low pass filtering functions, gain compensation, termination impedance compensation and balance network compensation to provide the prope r balanced network as is known in current POTS cards but not provided in curre nt XDSL services. This card may also be used alone, without a XDSL equipped lin e.

    Abstract: A system and method that provides lifeline service to DSL customers (20-23) when a loss-of-power message is sent to the central office (24) from an integrated access device (50-53) on the customer premise. If a predetermined number of loss-of-power messages are received then power is provided to the integrated access device from the central office. To this end, a power supply (100) at the central office provides power through an isolator circuit (102) to a relay (106). The relay is connected through to the twisted pair (48) to the integrated access device. The data connection may also be powered in this manner or, in order to save further wattage, the data connection may be disconnected for the duration of the power outage.

This card may also be used alone, without a XDSL equipped line.
