Abstract: A system (10), method, and program for remotely interacting with a diagnosti c interface (26) on wireless computer devices (12, 18, 20, 22). The wireless device (12, 18, 20, 22) provides an accessible diagnostic interface (269 tha t allows reads and/or writes to device resident diagnostic data and tools. Through use of interaction, wireless device status data and network status data can be gathered and utilized, and if so embodied, the diagnostic tools resident on the wireless devices ( 12, 18, 20, 22) can be manipulated to alt er wireless device operation.

Abstract: A system (10), method, and program for optimizing a wireless network (14) having at least data communication between computer devices (12, 18, 20, 22) selectively connected thereto, and at least one of the computer devices (12, 18, 20, 22) is a remotely located wireless device. The wireless device (12, 18, 20, 22) has a resident network optimization application that causes the selective transmission of network status data to at least one other computer device on the wireless network (14), and either the data-receiving computer device (12, 18, 22, 22) or another computer device (12, 18, 20, 22) on the wireless network (14) optimizes the wireless network (14) based upon the received network status data.

Abstract: A wireless communication device provides streamlined access to recording functions that allow a user to readily record information from a called directory information service provider or other predetermined number. Directory service provider numbers and other predetermined numbers are stored in the system and compared with a user selected destination telephone number. If a match is detected, the system display automatically enables a recording function or prompts the user to manually activate the recording function to permit the user to manually record information obtained from the directory information service provider. Alternatively, the information may be automatically transferred directly into the system without user intervention through a communication link using a formatted data exchange. The system includes options for editing the recorded information, permanently storing the recorded information, and completing a call to the telephone number provided by the service.

Abstract: A system (12, 36, 60) for conveying information pertaining to a wireless communications link (14) adapted for use with data and fax calls placed via a wireless communications device (12). The system (12, 36, 60) includes a first mechanism (12, 16, 22) that establishes a communications link (18, 16, 22) between a wireless communications device (12), which includes a display (44), and an external electronic device (24). A second mechanism (60) obtains connection status information pertaining to the communications link (18, 16, 22). The connection status information includes the information transfer rate between the wireless communications device (12) and the external electronic device (24). A third mechanism (60) displays the connection status information via the display (44). In a specific embodiment, the wireless communications device (12) is a wireless telephone (12). The second mechanism (60) includes a first software routine (60) running on the wireless phone (12) for measuring characteristics of the communications link (18, 16, 22) including the information transfer rate. The third mechanism (60) includes a second software routine (60) running on the wireless phone (12) for displaying the characteristics via a graphic indicator representative of the characteristics and displaying the graphic indicator on the display. The graphic indicator includes a bar whose height varies in accordance with data transfer rates. The connection status information further includes a first indicator for specifying a communications link type such as data, fax, or point-to-point protocol link and also includes a second indicator for indicating a transmit and receive rates associated with the communications link.

Abstract: A wireless communication device (101) having intuitive audio keypad navigation features is provided. Each of the keys (140-151) of a keypad (132) of the wireless communication device (101) is assigned a different audible signal (FIGS. 3-4). When a user of the wireless communication device (101) presses one of the keys (140-151), a processor (112) responds by triggering an output driver (124). The output driver (124) generates a unique output signal corresponding to the pressed key (140-151). A speaker (122) or alert circuit (126) is responsive to the triggering of the output driver (124) to generate a unique audible signal (FIGS. 3-4) associated with the unique output signal of the pressed key (140-151). In this manner, an audio feedback is provided to the user that uniquely identifies each of the keys (140-151) as they are pressed.

Abstract: A system uses conventional text messaging capabilities of cellular telephone systems to embed one or more call-back telephone numbers. A start delimiter is used to separate a text data portion corresponding to the call-back telephone number from the text message. A termination delimiter may be used to indicate the end of the text data portion corresponding to the call-back telephone number. Multiple text data portions, corresponding to multiple call-back telephone numbers, may be inserted using multiple start delimiters and termination delimiters. A text parser in the cellular telephone searches the text message for the start delimiter and extracts the text data portion corresponding to the call-back telephone number. The cellular telephone user selects a desired call-back telephone number, which may be placed in a dialing queue for simplified communications between the cellular telephone and a destination corresponding to the selected call-back telephone number.

Abstract: A system for user-programming of system parameters of a cellular telephone. Data values for the system parameters are stored in a nonvolatile memory within the cellular telephone. A password storage area stores one or more predetermined passwords. After purchasing the telephone, the end-user calls a predetermined telephone number and receives one of the predetermined passwords. The user enables a programming mode and enters the predetermined password using the cellular telephone keypad. If the user-entered password matches the stored predetermined password, the cellular telephone allows user access to at least a portion of the system parameters in the nonvolatile memory. A counter tracks the number of user-programming attempts and terminates the programming after either a predetermined number of failures or successful programming of all the desired system parameter values.
