    Abstract: A system and method for aiding emergency service providers in locating an incapacitated individual by use of a wireless communications device. The invention has two major modes of operation based upon whether the line of communication between the handset and call destination is open or closed. If the connection between the handset and the call destination is open, the audible beacon periodically generates a preselected tone through the built-in speaker of the telephone. The audible beacon may be initiated from the call destination location, after there has been an established link between the telephone and the call destination, whether the connection is open or closed. Once the audible beacon is initiated, the stored volume settings of the handset are replaced by the volume settings of the audible beacon system and the preselected tone of a telephone ringer or a beep. The tone remains activated until manually turned off.

    Abstract: A wireless communication device (101) having intuitive audio keypad navigation features is provided. Each of the keys (140-151) of a keypad (132) of the wireless communication device (101) is assigned a different audible signal (FIGS. 3-4). When a user of the wireless communication device (101) presses one of the keys (140-151), a processor (112) responds by triggering an output driver (124). The output driver (124) generates a unique output signal corresponding to the pressed key (140-151). A speaker (122) or alert circuit (126) is responsive to the triggering of the output driver (124) to generate a unique audible signal (FIGS. 3-4) associated with the unique output signal of the pressed key (140-151). In this manner, an audio feedback is provided to the user that uniquely identifies each of the keys (140-151) as they are pressed.

    Abstract: A wireless communication device, known as a mobile station (MS), contains a conventional wireless communication system and further comprises a wireless computer network communication subsystem and may also include GPS capability. The operator of the MS may utilize any or all of these subsystems to determine the current position of the MS. Based on the current position of the MS, location-based services are provided to the MS as sales information, schedules, prices, maps, and the like. In a typical implementation a plurality of computer network access points, or beacons, are distributed throughout a geographic region and used to determine the position of the MS with a reasonably high degree of accuracy. Based on the current position of the MS, the beacons can provide location-based services.

    Abstract: An apparatus for providing a custom profile in a wireless device, and a method of modifying an audio profile in a wireless device, are disclosed. The apparatus includes a memory into which at least one criterion is entered by the user, a receiver that receives an audio signal, a comparator that receives the audio signal from the receiver, and that receives at least a first of the least one criterion from the memory, and that compares the audio signal to the first criterion, and an adjustor that adjusts the audio signal based on the result from the comparator. The method includes the steps of entering, by a user of the wireless device, of a first criterion, comparing an audio signal received by the wireless device to the first criterion, adjusting the audio signal based on the output of the comparing step, and playing the adjusted audio signal to the user, or broadcasting the adjusted audio signal to a remote caller.
