    Abstract: A pix-in-pix television display includes circuitry for reducing the amount of memory needed to hold one field of the reduced size image. In the display apparatus, digital samples representing the large and small picture signals are developed at substantially equal rates by separate circuitry. Subsampling circuitry stores one out of every five of the samples representing a horizontal line of the small picture. These samples are displayed, synchronous with the large picture at a rate three-fifths times the display rate of the large picture samples to produce an apparent size reduction of one-third in the horizontal direction.

    Abstract: System performance of picture-in-picture video display systems is dependent on critical timing relationships between the incoming signals and the clock signals used to sample and display both the large picture and small picture signals. Video signals from various sources, e.g. VTR's, tend to have jittering time bases which may cause the small image to appear jagged or tilted. This distortion in the small image may be reduced by effecting adaptive signal delays in the small picture signal responsive to the relative phase of the system clock signal with respect to the horizontal synchronizing pulses of the large and/or small picture signal. One phase measure is used to control an interpolator which combines successive samples of the small picture signal in proportions to develop sample values corresponding to samples that would have occurred had the small picture signal been sampled by a clock properly aligned to the small picture horizontal synchronizing pulses. A second phase measure is used to delay the clock signal used to display the small picture so that the clock pulses that define the edges of the small picture occurs with the same timing relative to the large picture horizontal synchronizing pulses form line-to-line.

    Abstract: A digital input signal to be delayed is applied to a two-point linear interpolation filter which imparts delay to the signal proportional to the value of a delay control signal. Errors in both the amplitude and the phase of the delayed signal are minimized by the addition of a correction signal to the delayed signal. The correction signal is provided by applying the input signal to a further filter and a multiplier connected in cascade. The further filter is a linear phase filter having a response zero at zero frequency and a delay equal to an add multiple of one-half of the sampling period, Ts, of the digital input signal. The multiplier is controlled so as to vary the amplitude of the compensating signal as a non-linear function of the delay control signal so as to provide maximum amplitude compensation at delays corresponding to odd multiples of Ts/2 and zero amplitude compensation at delays equal to integer multiples of Ts.

    Abstract: In the playback of a video disc record employing an FM carrier recording format, a defect compensation system is provided which substitutes delayed video signals for current video signals when a defect is encountered. A phase locked loop including a phase detector and a voltage controlled oscillator is employed in FM detection circuits. A defect detector compares the phase between the oscillator output signal and a signal corresponding to the recovered signal. When the phase difference between these two signals exceeds a certain value, a defect signal is generated to disable the normal signal path of the recovered signal so that the delayed version of the video may be substituted for the current video for the duration of the occurrence of the defect.

    Abstract: A pix-in-pix display includes a filtering system for processing the video signals which produce the reduced-size image. The filtering system includes an anti-aliasing filter - (210) which reduces the amplitude of the components of the video signals which may cause aliasing distortion when the image is subsampled. However, the filter passes substantial amounts of these components. The filtered video signal is subsampled (212) and applied to a peaking filter (220) which amplifies the band of frequencies containing the aliasing components relative to lower frequency bands to improve the appearance of detailed portions of the reproduced image.

    Abstract: An active filter separates the function of a principal feedback loop which provides velocity error correction from that of a nested feedback loop which provides video signal frequency correction. A further feedback loop responsive to the active filter output signal normally open under steady-state conditions, is closed under transient conditions for supplying a limited gain reducing signal to the input of the active filter whereby transient disturbance of the primary and nested loops is minimized with no loss of loop gain under steady-state conditions. The third loop includes a dead zone amplifier for distinguishing between transient and steady-state conditions and a limiter for limiting the gain reducing signal to level below that which otherwise would tend to drive the active filter to a non-linear slow recovery condition.

    Abstract: RCA 74,083 STYLUS POSITION SENSING APPARATUS FOR VIDEO DISC PLAYER In a video disc player, a stylus arm, carrying a track-following stylus at one end thereof, has its other end secured to an arm cage by a compliant member. The arm cage is translated along a path disposed radially of the disc record during playback. Pickup circuits are employed for sensing the variations in a signal representative capacitance formed between an electrode incorporated in the pickup stylus and conductive material disposed in the record to recover prerecorded information from a spiral track disposed on the record. A stylus position indicative capacitance, established between a first electrode secured to the stylus arm and coupled to the pickup circuits and a second electrode mounted to the carriage in the vicinity of the first electrode, is modulated at a given frequency rate. Circuitry is provided for sensing signals at a given frequency appearing at the output of the pickup circuits to generate a signal indicative of the position of the pickup stylus relative to the arm cage. The rate of translation of the carriage is varied in response to the stylus position indicative signal to maintain a desired relationship between the pickup stylus and the arm cage.
