The present invention relates to a polyester polymerization catalyst, comprising a solution containing an aluminum compound and an alkali compound, with water or an organic solvent or a mixture consisting of water and an organic solvent as the medium, a production method thereof, and a polyester production method, in which the product obtained by the esterification reaction or ester interchange reaction between an aromatic dicarboxylic acid or any of its ester forming derivative and a diol is polycondensed, to produce a polyester, comprising the use of said polymerization catalyst containing an aluminum compound. The present invention can provide a polyester excellent in processability and can overcome such problems as spinneret contamination, filtration pressure rise, filament breaking, film breaking and foreign matter production in the production process of products such as fibers, films, resins and bottles.

A polyester composition comprising 0.005 to 10 % by weight of compound oxide particles having a volume average particle diameter of 0.005 to 2 .mu. m and composed mainly of silicon (Si), aluminium (A1) and at least one alkali metal (M), wherein the contents of the silicon, aluminium and alkali metal satisfy the following requirements: 10 wt.%? Si ? 45 wt.%, 3 wt.%? Al ? 30 wt.% and 0.5 wt.%? M ? 20 wt.%, respectively. The polyester composition, particularly when formed into films, has excellent surface evenness, running ability and abrasion resistance, and such films are suitable particularly for magnetic recording media and other applications.

A practical polyester which is provided with substantially no antimony compound as a polycondensation catalyst. (I) One of the polyester resin compositions has an antimony content of 30 ppm by weight or lower, a titanium content of 0.5 to 50 ppm by weight, and a phosphorus content of 0.1 to 100 ppm by weight and has titanium-containing particles having a diameter of 1 µm or larger in terms of equivalent-circle diameter, the number of the particles being less than 100 per 0.02 mg. (II) The other polyester resin composition has an antimony content of 30 ppm by weight or lower, a titanium content of 0.5 to 50 ppm by weight, and a phosphorus content of 0.1 to 100 ppm by weight and contains 0.1 to 5 wt.% organic polymer particles which have an average particle diameter as measured by the dynamic light scattering method of 0.05 to 3 µm and in which the number of coarse particles having a particle diameter at least two times the average particle diameter account for up to 0.01% of the number of all particles.

This invention relates to a polyester composition containing particles of a cross-linked polymer having an ester bond in the principal chain. These particles have excellent affinity for polyester. Accordingly, in a film molded from polyester containing these particles, the particles hardly come off during a high-speed travelling of the film, and flaws ascribed to the particles also hardly occur on the film surface. Therefore, the deterioration of a film due to the occurrence of white powder thereon which is ascribed to the falling of the particles, which has posed problems when various kinds of particles were added, and due to the flaws on a magnetic surface can be prevented. Moreover, the contamination of the film manufacturing processes can be prevented, and the film thus obtained can be used suitably as, especially, magnetic tape.

This invention discloses a solid-phase polymerization method of high-molecular-weight aliphatic polyester, in which the solid-phase polymerization of aliphatic polyester prepolymer is conducted under a gas stream containing sulfonic acid catalyst. While gaining advantages of simple process and low operation cost, etc. the method also features in being able to prepare metal free aliphatic polyester with high molecular weight, good color and luster and perfect thermal stability efficiently. The non-metal-ion aliphatic polyester is not only applicable to common use, but is also suitable as high value-added medical material and packing material which contacts with food directly than other metal-containing polyester.

Disclosed is a process for producing a polyester composition which can be obtained by polycondensation of a dicarboxylic acid or ester-forming derivative thereof and a diol or ester-forming derivative thereof in presence of a polycondensation catalyst, in which a polyester having a good color tone can be obtained by adding a specific phosphorus compound after a polycondensation catalyst is added and pressure reduction in polymerization reactor is started and before the polycondensation of the polyester is substantially completed, and at a time in which the polyester reaches 75% or more of the intrinsic viscosity to be finally reached in said polymerization reactor.
