Abstract: A ball-on-belt transport includes a belt (71) with a steel ball (77) positioned on top of the belt and a magnet (79) on the back side of the belt with the ball forming a nip with the belt to provide necessary normal force against a conveyed sheet and thereby allowing easy lateral pulling of sheets in clearing jams from the nip. Alternatively, a steel ball (85) is retained while in contact with a belt to apply a normal force to a sheet on the belt equal to the weight of the steel ball. The ball (85) is encased in a housing (81) that is surrounded by a solenoid coil (84) such that when current is applied to the coil, it acts as a solenoid and raises the ball off the belt surface and thus releases the nip pressure.

Abstract: A device for automatically adjusting conditioner metering roll liquid film thickness. The device comprising a transfer roll (102,103) that mates with a back-up roll (104,105) to form a nip (106,107) through which a sheet passes for wetting a side of it. A metering roll (108,109) mates with the transfer roll (102,103) and has a portion thereof positioned in a liquid filled sump (110) for liquid to be added to an outside surface thereof. An optical sensor (140) is positioned to detect light reflected from the liquid on the outside surface of the metering roll (108,109) and gives off a signal that is received by a controller (90) that actuates a stepper motor (112,113) to move the metering roll (108,109) in a predetermined direction until the correct liquid thickness is obtained on the surface of the metering roll (108,109).

Abstract: A paper conditioner (100) to control image dependent curl which uses one or more counterrotating transfer rollers (102, 103) which are initially spaced from their respective back-up rollers (104, 105) in the intercopy gap, and which come together as the lead edge enters the nip area, and separates when the trail edge is about to pass. This permits the rollers to have a less demanding runout tolerance by bringing the rollers together when the sheet is in the nip, and then articulating the rollers apart in the intercopy gap.

Abstract: A sheet guide position sensor which determines the dimensions of a stack of sheets (54) in a tray (100) having adjustable sheet guides (102). An optical sensor (110) is arranged so that movement of a sheet guide (102) causes a variably graduated scale (104) to be moved past the sensor (110). The sensor (110) may either be a transmissive or reflective type analog sensor in which the strength of the signal generated by the sensor is converted into a position of the sheet guides. A recalibration process is used to prevent contamination of the scale from causing the size determinations by the sensor to be inaccurate. In one embodiment, a digital sensor in cooperation with a digital bar code (Fig.5) or other digital scale can be utilized to determine the variable sheet size, since the digital sensor is insensitive to contamination by dirt or paper particles, etc. In another embodiment, a wiper member (140; Fig.4) is used to clean the variably graduated scales (104).

Abstract: A sheet stacking and registration system (10) particularly suited for high speed sequentially stacking of the flimsy printed sheets output of a high speed reproduction apparatus (14) in a sheet stacking area (20), with a stacking registration position (30); with a vacuum belt sheet transport system (40) acquiring only a limited lead edge area of the sheets and transporting them over the stacking area with non-slip sheet feeding towards the registration position; and an integral system (50) peeling the lead edges of the sheets off of the vacuum transport and guiding them downwardly and towards the lead edge registration position while reducing but partially maintaining the sheet's vacuum acquisition, and applying a normal force, preferably with a roller (56) pressing down the lead edges of the peeled off sheet against the previously stacked sheets adjacent the registration position, to frictionally slow the sheet as it approaches the registration position, and also holding down the sheet after it reaches the stacking position. The sheet transport may have spaced belt flights (44a,44b) with spaced patterns (82) of vacuum apertures (80) spaced between substantially unapertured areas along the belts, and a synchronized belt drive to synchronously engage the lead edge areas of the incoming sheets. An upstream natural arcuate inversion path (66) with a side registration system (70) may be integrated therewith.

Abstract: In an automatic document handling system for a copier, with a system for feeding and registering document sheets, including an across-platen transport system including a document belt system and a vacuum system for retaining documents against the document belt system by suction, a common path is used for feeding either conventional cut-sheets or continuous-web (CF) documents. The vacuum system automatically maintaining a first vacuum level high enough to retain the cut-sheets against the document belts with sufficient force to resist slippage and function as their primary platen transport system, and automatically reduces the vacuum to a substantially-lower level for CF documents, permitting slippage of CF documents relative to the document belt system. The CF documents are de-skewing upstream of the platen and pulled across the platen from downstream thereof, to provide a dual mode system in which the platen transport system provides for low-frictional relative movement and an imaging background surface for CF documents, but is not their primary transport.

Abstract: In an automatic document handling system for a copier, with a system for feeding and registering document sheets, including a platen transport system, wherein the platen transport system includes a document belt system and a vacuum system for retaining documents against the document belt system, the improvement including common document input and path systems for feeding either conventional document sheets or computer form or other web (CF) documents, the document belt system comprising relatively low friction belt material, the vacuum system automatically maintaining a first vacuum level high enough to retain the conventional document sheets against the document belt system with sufficient force to resist slippage and function as their primary platen transport system, and a vacuum reduction system for automatically reducing the vacuum to a substantially lower level for CF documents which provides for slippage of CF documents relative to the document belt system, and a separate deskewing and driving system for the CF documents in cooperation with the platen transport system, for deskewing the CF web upstream of the platen and pulling it through the platen transport system from downstream thereof, to provide a dual mode system in which the platen transport system provides for low frictional relative movement and an imaging background surface for CF documents, but is not their primary transport. There is also a system for automatically sensing the acquisition of CF documents and in response automatically reducing the vacuum level and disengaging additional roller drive systems in the path which normally engage conventional document sheets.

Abstract: OF THE DISCLOSED EMBODIMENT Providing plural precollated sets of copies by plurally recirculating a set of documents and normally making two consecutive identical copies per document per circulation, at one-half the copying rate of the copier, feeding these pair of identical copy sheets seperately into two of only 3 (or 4) movable compiler bins, sequentially accumulating and stacking these copy sheets into completed, compiled, collated copy sheet sets in each of the two compiler bins, and then removing the sets one at a time for finishing, from the opposite side of the bins, and sequentially changing, for subsequent circulations of the sets of documents, which 2 of the 3 compiler bins are being fed pairs of copy sheets, and which compiler bin is not, so that a compiled set of copy sheets may be removed from its bin or left in awaiting finishing of a prior set without having any copy sheets fed into that bin, in coordination with and without interfering with said feeding and directing of other copy sheets into other compiler bins. Preferably two copy sheets are fed into the same compiler bin in directly immediate sequence (the second copy of one document and the first copy of the next document) to reduce the number of operations of the bin gates. When there are an odd number of documents, preferably three identical copies are made of each document in a final copying circulation of the document set and fed into all 3 bins, unless the copies are duplex and there are too many documents for plural duplex buffer sets.

Abstract: An improved document handler for transporting and registering document sheets over the platen of a copier, having first and second plural sets of document transport belts extending in the direction of document transport over the platen, with the first set of belts being transversely inter-digitated with the second set of belts, with the first set of belts having a substantially higher frictional driving force on document sheets than the second set of belts other than in said registration area to predominantly control the transporting of a document sheet over the platen except in the registration area, and with the second set of belts being more closely positioned to the registration area of the platen than the first set of belts and driven at a slightly higher speed so as to predominantly control the transport of a document sheet in the registration area during its registration.
