Abstract: A printing apparatus includes a guide member for directing sheets toward a transfer zone. The guide member defines a set of ribs which hold the sheets above the main surface of the guide member. Thus, any stray marking material which lands on the guide member is relatively unlikely to contact a sheet moving over the guide member.

Abstract: A maintenance system for an ink jet printer of the type having a full width array printhead has a movable carriage with a droplet sensor and a nozzle recovery device. As the carriage moves along the length of the printhead, each nozzle checked, one at a time, by the droplet sensor for the presence or absence of an ejected droplet and if the droplet has the correct directionality. Any problem nozzle is identified during a single traversal of the carriage across the printhead, and during a second traversal, the identified problem nozzles have a recovery operation performed on them such as being cleaned to remove any dried ink or other contaminating particles or being primed in the case of a clogged nozzle. The problem nozzles which have had a recovery operation performed on them and checked again by the droplet sensor is required for the entire array of nozzles, and ink is conserved since only predetermined nozzles are printed.

Abstract: A ball-on-belt transport includes a belt (71) with a steel ball (77) positioned on top of the belt and a magnet (79) on the back side of the belt with the ball forming a nip with the belt to provide necessary normal force against a conveyed sheet and thereby allowing easy lateral pulling of sheets in clearing jams from the nip. Alternatively, a steel ball (85) is retained while in contact with a belt to apply a normal force to a sheet on the belt equal to the weight of the steel ball. The ball (85) is encased in a housing (81) that is surrounded by a solenoid coil (84) such that when current is applied to the coil, it acts as a solenoid and raises the ball off the belt surface and thus releases the nip pressure.

Abstract: A full-width ink-jet printer comprises a printhead (14) defining in a surface an array of nozzle (22) openings for the emission of ink droplets therethrough. A shuttle (50) is adapted to travel on a track (52,56) through a fixed path generally parallel to the array. Mounted on the shuttle (50) are an applicator (60) for applying a liquid to the nozzle (22) openings and a vacuum device (62) for applying suction to the nozzle openings.

Abstract: A method of printing includes processing a print job stream to identify o ne or more images to be printed on a first substrate. The first substrate has a substrate attribute, such as paper weight or surface roughness, which is different from that of a second substrate. A marking engine is selected to print the identified images on the selected first substrate. An operating parameter of the marking engine is modified from a set point for the second substrate to a modified set point for the first substrate, to accommodate the substrate attribute of the selected first substrate. The identified images are sent to the selected marking engine to be printed.
