Abstract: A method and apparatus for requesting PPP instances from a packet data services network includes a mobile station configured to send an origination message to a packet data service node (PDSN) at which it has arrived upon leaving the vicinity of another PDSN. The message informs the new PDSN of the new location of the mobile station and indicates both the number of dormant PPP instances associated with the mobile station and a service reference identifier for each such PPP instance. A flag within the message may be used to indicate whether the PPP instances are dormant (i.e., whether the mobile station is engaged in a call). Communications channel resources of packet data services nodes are optimized by reducing the information included in messages from the Packet Control Function network element to the Packet Data Service Node network element, and by reducing the use of Mobile Internet Protocol agent advertisement.

Abstract: Method and apparatus for encrypting transmission traffic at separate protocol layers L1, L2, and L3 so that separate encryption elements can be assigned to separate types of transmission traffic, which allows the implementation of different levels of encryption according to service requirements. Encryption elements use variable value inputs, called crypto-syncs, along with semi-permanent encryption keys to protect from replay attacks from rogue mobile stations. Since crypto-sync values vary, a method for synchronizing crypto-syncs at the mobile station and base station is also presented.

Abstract: Method and apparatus for encrypting transmission traffic at separate protoco l layers L1 (220), L2 (210), and L3 (200) so that separate encryption elements (204) can be assigned to separate types of transmission traffic (201, 203, 205), which allows the implementation of different levels of encryption according to service requirements. Encryption elements (204) use variable value inputs, called crypto-syncs, along with semi-permanent encryption keys to protect from replay attacks from rogue mobile stations. Since crypto-sync values vary, a method for synchronization and authentificated registration o f crypto-syncs is also presented. Crypto-scancs can be built expediently for each different type of traffic frame by using different system resources. In one embodiment, a cyclic redundancy check (CRC) can be used to verify crypto - syncs.

Abstract: A method and system for transmitting digital data by extending the sequence numbering range for a selective repeat transmission protocol are described. In accordance with one embodiment of the invention, data frames (70) are transmitted including an eight-bit sequence number (72) and a one-bit retransmit flag (74). The one-bit retransmit flag (74) indicates whether the frame is newly transmitted or retransmitted due to a failed first transmission. Transmit (50) and receive (52) systems each maintain a twelve-bit sequence number referred to as a "long sequence number" comprised of the eight-bit sequence number transmitted with each frame and a four-bit extension. The long sequence number is transmitted within a control frame (82) and the eight-bit sequence number is transmitted within the data frame (72).

Abstract: A method for detecting delayed data frames in a transport function includes the steps of comparing a frame sequence counter with a predetermined threshold value, detecting a delayed frame if the sequence counter exceeds the threshold value, and processing the detected delayed frame accordingly. In an RLP data transport protocol, the delayed frame may be processed as a retransmitted frame. The threshold value may be proportional to the maximum number of frames sent in a given bundle times the maximum delay, in units of frame intervals, between frames sent simultaneously over the air in the same frame interval.

Abstract: In a channel structure for use in communication systems, two sets of physical channels, one for the forward link (50) and another for the reverse link (52), are utilized to facilitate communication of a variety of logical channels. The physical channels comprise data and control channels. In the exemplary embodiment, the data channels comprise fundamental channels which are used to transmit voice traffic, data traffic, high speed data, and other overhead information and supplemental channels which are used to transmit high speed data. The fundamental channels can be released when the remote stations are idle to more fully utilize the available capacity. The control channels are used to transmit paging and control messages and scheduling information.
