Abstract: A scanner includes a scan head having a linear array of transducers Xn, and a transmitter 106 which excites the transducers in response to transmit signals TRn from a reference generator 110 so that the transducers emit a plurality of successive bursts of ultrasonic energy, each burst producing a transmitted beam which is steered and focused along a radially-extending scan line. To effect received beam steering and focusing, received signals Sn from the transducers are supplied to a processor 112 along with associated in-phase binary reference signals bn(R) and quadrature binary reference signals bn(I). The received signal is multiplied by a reference signal and the product is integrated for a specific time duration whose time occurrence is used to steer and focus the beam. Processor 112 is responsive to WRITE SELECT, READ SELECT and SAMPLE signals from reference generator 110 to correlate each signal Sn with its associated reference signals during a plurality of successive resolution windows, each of which corresponds to a distinct incremental area along a scan line, so as to provide in-phase and quadrature output signals Re and Im each representing a response of the array to reflections from successive incremental areas along a scan line. Signals Re and Im are combined by processors 114 and 116 to develop output signals A and O representing, respectively, the amplitude and phase of returns from successive incremental areas along a scan line. Information for transmitted and received beam steering and focusing is stored in a phase pattern memory 118A, and extracted therefrom by a controller 118 in a predetermined order and supplied to reference generator 110.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the mingling of an unnecessary virtual image into Doppler information by making a filter process with a minimum-maximum value filter. SOLUTION: Image clutter is removed from a Doppler signal by a flash suppressing processor for each large frame in a display signal. When the Doppler signal of the new frame Fn is received, it is compared with the value of the previous frame Fn-1 , and the minimum value MIN1 is selected by a minimum value selector 630. It is compared with the previously selected minimum value MIN2 stored in an image buffer A by a maximum value selector 636 to select the maximum value MAX. The minimum-maximum value is subtracted from the Doppler signal value of the frame Fn-1 at that time by a subtractor 638, it is compared with the signal displacement threshold value by a comparator 640. If it is the threshold value or above, the minimum-maximum value is set as the Doppler signal value of the present frame. If it is the threshold value or below, the frame value Fn-1 is set as the Doppler signal value of the present frame. A virtual image can be then removed.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable tracking of the structure of contracting, slackening and opening or closing motions by a method wherein the edge of a structure in an image to specify the edge to be tracked and traced, and the specified edge is tracked or traced during the sequence of the motion using seed information concerning the specified edge. SOLUTION: The edge of the structure in a gray scale scan line is traced by a motion tracking device 30 to track the motion of blood cells, tissues or the like as a moving structure in the gray scale scan line using a Doppler signal. Firstly, irrelevant virtual images and noises are removed by noise removers 32 and 34 from the gray scale and the Doppler scan line involved. As for the gray scale scan line, the detection of the edge is implemented by an edge detector 36 to specify the position of the edge of the structure along the scan line. In the scan line sequence, the edge containing a specified point by an edge tracking device 38 is traced to learn the speed and the direction of motion at a border point thereby enabling following of the edge.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To speedily improve the quality of three-dimensional(3D) display even for a doctor, who experiences 3D scan for the first time, by adjusting the body scan by the doctor to a appropriate sweep speed through a visible and/or audible scan guide and informing the doctor of the amount of image data obtained. SOLUTION: In order to support the doctor who possesses series of 2D image fragments reconstituted for forming a 3D ultrasonic image and stores them in a memory, the visible guide indicating the occupied state of the memory is displayed on a screen. A box 100 is provided at the lower part of the display screen under an ultrasonic image 60, a color or gray scale bar 64 is displayed on the left side of a picture, and the indication of depth is displayed on the right side of the picture. A window 104 of the box 100 displays the capacitance of an image frame memory and when the image memory is cleared, the window is completely turned black. The value of a frame counter in PCM(pulse code modulation) is displayed as a white bar 102 in the window 104.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To fix a bent part with a variable fixing force at a required position by providing at a control part a braking mechanism applying the braking force for fixing a bendable end in a bent condition to the control mechanism, and providing the braking mechanism with means for allowing a user to apply the selectable braking force of various levels. SOLUTION: An end of an endoscope tube 12 extending from one end of a handle 10 of a search unit serves as an end 14 of the search unit where an ultrasonic transducer is positioned. An electric cable 16 extending from the other end of the handle 10 is connected to a connector 18 which is connected to an ultrasonic system. Buttons 20, 22 control selection of image plane scanned by the transducer in the end of the search unit. The end of the search unit is connected to the endoscope tube 12 via a bent part 30 which can be bent in its end in any direction of four directions from the handle 10 by means of an up/down bend control knob 26 as well as right/left bend control knob 24. Reciprocation braking buttons 28, 28' are used to fix the bent part in any bend condition and release it therefrom.

Abstract: PURPOSE: To clearly and continuously look at the needle tip by reciprocating the needle tip of a biopsy needle having a tip end part pointed hollow enveloping tube by motion positionally detectable by an ultrasonic wave image system to generate an image whose operation is depicted in a position. CONSTITUTION: A biopsy needle is inserted into tissue 30, and is turned to a part 31, and also into a visual field of a scan head 10. When the needle comes in its visual field, motion of a tip vibrating member 42 of an enveloping tube 40 generates a Doppler response by an image system. Its Dappler response is positionally shown in an ultrasonic wave image of a structure by becoming a spot or a dot of a color. The spot or the dot of a color shows a position of motion of the member 42 by the tip of the enveloping tube, and when the biopsy needle turns to the part 31, its spot approaches the part 31 in an image display. When the spot of a color coincides with the part 31 in an image, the enveloping tube 40 exists in a proper position to perform biopsy of the part.

Abstract: An improved scan converter for converting received echo signals representative of the amplitude of ultrasound energy returning from sampled points along a plurality of spaced apart paths distributed in an image space into signals to be displayed as display pixels in a raster scan display system. The scan converter includes a scan data memory for storing the received echo signals in quadrants of the scan data memory. Each quadrant is associated with even and odd numbered paths and sample row combinations. Sample rows are related to sample points along the spaced apart paths. The scan converter further includes a circuit for determining a gray scale value to be assigned to each selected display pixel based on a predetermined combination of four received echo signals adjacent the selected display pixel and chosen from the quadrants of the scan data memory. The improved scan converter is capable of operation in both linear and sector scan modes, and, when in the sector mode, over 90 DEG and 180 DEG sectors. Variable scaling between the image space and display space and correction of the hose error when the scanning system employs an oscillating wobbler scan head are provided. Various techniques for converting display pixel rectangular coordinates into polar coordinates in real time for raster scan display are employed.
