The controller stores a reference temperature value for the temperature sensor. The controller determines the heat deterioration of the catalytic substance when the value of the measured temperature of the exhaust gas, which is raised by the controller, does not reach the reference temperature value, and then updates the reference temperature value into the value of the measured temperature.
