Abstract: Catalyst component for use in Ziegler catalyst systems for the polymerisation olefins is prepd. by (a) mixing (1) porous silicon dioxide particles and (2) a Mg cpd. dissolved in an organic solvent, the wt. ratio (1)/(2) being 1/0.01-0.25. and (b) mixing (3) the solid prod. from stage (a) with (4) a V or Ti deriv. in the liq. or solid state, or dissolved in an organic solvent, the wt. ratio (3)/(4) being 1/0.01-20. Cpd. (1) has a particle size of 1-1000 mu, a pore volume of 0.3-3 cm3/g., and an active surface of 100-1000 m2/g. Catalyst gives a high polymer yield. The polymer has a low halogen content. Polymsn. can be effected in dry phase at relatively low temps. Morphological properties of the polymer can be controlled. In particular, polymer having a uniform particle size and high apparent density can be obtd.

Abstract: The catalyst is prepd. by (A) preparing a silicic acid-xerogel by (i) extracting >=60%, pref. >=90% of the water contained in a silicic acid-hydrogen contg. 10-25 (esp. 14-20)% solids (calc. as SiO2), with a 1-4C alkanol and/or a 3-5C alkanone; (ii) drying the gel from (i) at 180 degrees C/10 torr/30 mins. until there is no further wt. loss (xerogel formation); (iii) comminuting the xerogel to a dia. of 20-2000 mu, pref. 40-300 mu; (B) admixing the xerogel with solid, finely divided chromium trioxide at 100-300 degrees C/0.001-250 torr, until the xerogel takes up 0.1-10% (calc. on the xerogel and as Cr) chromium trioxide; (C) maintaining the prod. from (B) in a gas stream free from water and contg. >10 vol. % O2 at 400-1000 degrees C/10-1000 mins. The hydrogel used in (A) comprises spherical particles of dia. 1-8 (pref. 2-6)mm. The catalyst is used for the homo- and co-polymerisation of 2-8C monoolefins and esp. for ethylene in suspension or in the dry phase. It has partic. high productivity.

Abstract: Olefin polymsn. catalyst is prepd. by (1) prepg. a finely divided SiO2 xerogel with particle size 10-2,000 um, (2) mixing with 0.1-10 wt. % (as Cr and w.r.t. SiO2) of Cr2O3 or its precursor in soln., and (3) passing through a dry gas stream contg. >=10 vol. % O2 for 10-1000 mins. at 400-1100 degrees C. Specif. the silica xerogel is prepd. by extracting 10-25 wt. % solid silica hydrogel with dry 1-4C alkanol and/or 3-5C alkanone to remove any water, extracting further with a hydrocarbon or oxa-hydrocarbon with b. pt. of -20 to +40 degrees C at 1 atm. and a heat of vaporisation 7 k.cal/mol to remove the first solvent, and heating for 30 mins. at 120 degrees C under vacuum of 10 Toor until no more wt. loss is shown. In stage (2) the xerogel is treated with a 0.05-5 wt. % soln. of Cr2O3 in a 3-5C alkanone or a Cr2O3 precursor in a 1-4C alkanol or 3-5C alkanone, the solvent contg. =20 wt. % water, and the solvent is then evaporated. Used for Phillips polymsn. processes for 2-8C mono alpha-olefins, esp. ethylene. Residual catalyst in polymerisate is negligible. Use of H2 as mol. wt. regulator is unnecessary.
