Abstract: A process for the purification of crude terephthalic acid comprises catalytic hydrogenation using a catalyst material (I) comprising a ca bon supported hydrogenation metal whereby the carbon support comprises carbon fibers. Independent claims are included for: (1) the catalyst material (I) whereby the carbon support has a BET surface area of less than 500 Micro 2>/g; (2) a reactor (II) containing a flat catalyst material in the form of cloth, textile and/or felt comprising a hydrogenation metal applied to carbon fibers and having at least two edges opposite to each other to which the catalyst material is stably affixed or containing the catalyst material in the form of parallel fibers or bands; and (3) a process for the selective hydrogenation of carbon-carbon double or triple bonds and/or hydrogenatable functional groups using the catalyst material (I) or reactor (II).
