    Abstract: Continuous prodn. of thermoplastic polyphenylene ether /polyamide moulding materials in an extruder comprises (1) reacting in a first zone at 240-350 deg.C (by wt. w.r.t. total components (a1)-(a5): (a1) 50-99.5% of a polyphenylene ether, (a2) 0-45% of a vinylaromatic polymer, (a3) 0.05-10% of (a31) an alpha-beta-unsatd. carboxylic acid of derivs. of this of formula R1-CO-C(R2)=C(R3)-CO-R4 (I) in which R1 and R4=OH, aryloxy, alkoxy, aralkoxy or cycloalkoxy gps. with up to 12C, or R1 and R4 together=-O- or -NR5-; R2 and R3=H, alkyl or cycloalkyl with up to 12C, aryl or Cl, or R2 and R3 may together form a 4-12C alkylene gp.; R5=alkyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl or aryl gp. wit- up to 12C, which may be substd. with 1-4C alkyl or alkoxy gps., and/or (a32) a monomer contg. an amide gp. and a polymerisable double bond, and/or (a33) a monomer contg. a lactam gp. and a polymerisable double bond; and opt. (a4) 0-80% other monomers suitable for grafting and (a5) 0-20% radical initiators, for 0.1-15 mins. to give a modified polyphenylene ether A; and (2) subsequently introducing into a further zone of the extruder at 250-350 deg.C (by wt. w.r.t. total components A-F); (B) 5-95 wt.% of a polyamide, (C) 0-90 wt.% of an unmodified polyphenylene ether, (D) 0-45% of a vinyl aromatic polymer, (E) 0-40% of an impact-improving modifying rubber, (F) 0-60% additives and processing aids, and finally extruding the mixt..

    Abstract: Compsns. (I) contains A) 60-95 pts.wt. at least one crystalline thermoplastic polyamide, B) 5-40 pts.wt. at least one rubber-elastic polymerisate without hard external shell, prepd. by emulsion polymerisation, having particle size distribution substantially governed by polymerisation process and particle size under 2 microns, dispersed in, and predominantly insol. in A), where sum of A) + B) = 100 pts.wt., opt. C) up to 100 pts.wt. glass fibres or other reinforcing filler, and opt. D) effective amts. of conventional auxiliary agents. Pref. A) is linear, with m.pt. above 200 deg.C and relative viscosity (1% in conc. H2SO4 at 23 deg.C) 2.5-4.0, partic. poly(hexamethylene adipamide) or polycaprolactam. B) is at least partially crosslinked and has glass transition temp. below -20 deg.C; has on surface of particle mol. gps. causing adhesion to mols. of A), partic. COOH, carboxylic ester, or carboxylic amide gps.
