    Abstract: In the continuous prodn. of carbyl sulphate, ethylene and SO2 in a molar ratio of 1:2 to 1:2.4 are passed at 110-150 degrees C as a uniform stream or in countercurrent through at least one tube or a bundle of parallel tubes, the tube(s) being vertical or inclined at an angle of up to 45 degrees and the ratio of tube length to tube dia. being 600:1 to 200:1, and the resulting carbyl sulphate is withdrawn from the lower end of the reactor system with exclusion of moisture. Carbyl sulphate is an important inter. for e.g. ethionic acid and ethenesulphonic acid, as well as their esters and amine reaction products, e.g. taurine or N-methyltaurine, which in turn are important intermediates for copolymers, stabilisers, detergents, textile aids, emulsifiers, pharmaceuticals, etc. Partic. important is the conversion of carbyl sulphate into vinylsulphonic acid, alkali salts of which as important additives for galvanic baths. The process gives pure carbyl sulphate in good yields without the use of inert solvents. The explosion risk associated with a process in which SO3 diluted with an inert gas is reacted with ethylene is a cyclone is avoided.
