Abstract: Trimethylol propane is isolated from a reaction mixture, obtained by reaction of n-butyraldehyde with formaldehyde in the presence of a base and optional hydrogenation of the mixture obtained. The mixture is distilled using a partition column or a distillation column with a pre-column or a distillation column with a post-column. The method is characterised by a low investment and energy cost and the reduced formation of high-boiling by-products.

The method makes it possible to separate trialkyl ammonium formate according to the organic Cannizzaro method and according to the hydrogenation method.

An independent claim is also included for such a catalyst in which commercially-available titanium dioxide is treated before or after shaping to form the support with 0.1-30 wt.% of an acid in which the TiO 2 is difficultly soluble.
