Abstract: Fuel cell (1) comprises two electrodes (2) and an ion exchange membrane (6). The electrodes each have an electro-catalytic layer (4) and a gas feed for a reaction gas (7). The electro-catalytic layers each contain a standard catalyst. The fuel cell further contains an additive that prevents the formation of peroxides and/or decomposes peroxides. Preferred Features: The additive is an element or compound of a metallic transition element or group IVa element, preferably cobalt (Co), iron (Fe), chromium (Cr), manganese (Mn), copper (Cu), vanadium (V), ruthenium (Ru), palladium (Pd), nickel (Ni), molybdenum (Mo), tin (Sn) or tungsten (W). The element or compound is supported on a carrier material selected from carbon, silica (SiO2), alumina (Al2O3), zeolite or hetero-poly acids.
